I was on my way to my parents' house and I couldn't help but compare it to where Lily was staying. I grew up with a good amount of money and my parents never let me forget that. When they bought things, they bought the most grandiose and most expensive things they could. Sometimes I wondered how my life would've been if I didn't grow up with money. I think my parents would've died.
Over the phone they had told me they were throwing me a welcome home dinner from my trip in Florida from my doctor's convention. I told them not to but they insisted.
I went through the gate and drove through the acres of useless land we owned. When I got to the door, I felt out of place and I thought how I've never noticed how different I am from my parents. They always cared of what other people thought of them. Ever since I was a little boy, my parents always compared me to my friends. She always said "Your friends have those shoes would you like some too" or she would see my friend's cars and offer to buy me the more expensive one. I was always okay with what I had but I would never say no. I just recently bought myself a new car and it's not extravagant like the ones my parents bought me in the past, so I know they won't approve but I like it. It's mine and it's probably the first thing I own that feels like me.
One step towards the door and I can already hear my parents yelling at each other. I roll my eyes as I knock on the door. As soon as the door opens I automatically regret coming.
Elizabeth: "Adrian, what the heck are you wearing?"
Adrian: "Hello to you too mother."
Daniel: "Leave the poor boy alone, he just got here."
He glares at his wife and then turns to me.
Daniel: "How are you son?"
Adrian: "Good dad, how are you?"
Daniel: "I'm good. Well, your mother on the other hand..."
Elizabeth: "Oh Daniel, leave me alone."
Some things never change. My parents have not moved a single thing since I left, which is odd since they have the money to afford a completely new and different house.
Elizabeth: "So Adrian, any girl in the picture?"
My mom always wanted to have control over my love life. She swore that all the girls I dated in high school were all worthless sluts that had nothing set out for them. So I decided on the smartest thing I've done since I stepped through that door, lie.
Adrian: "No mother. Will you ever trust me to find someone by myself?"
Daniel: "We just want the best for you. Let's be realistic, you are not going to be 27 forever."
Adrian: "I know."
Elizabeth: "Well, it's good that you don't have anyone at the moment because one of your father's new interns, Juliette, is coming over to have dinner with us tonight. And may I add how beautiful she is."
Adrian: "Mom, you can't just set me up with any pretty girl out there."
Elizabeth: "Just give her a chance, you never know."
I'm so tired of this conversation that I just nod and grab my stuff to take up to my room. I take a quick shower before my mom comes up yelling at me that hosts are never late to arrive at their own event. As I walk down the stairs, someone's outside ringing the doorbell. As I open the door, the pretty intern is standing right outside. I introduce myself properly and she gives her name Juliette but says that everyone calls her Julie.
As we sit down and eat dinner, I look at her and find her attractive and familiar, she looks so familiar. Maybe I have met her before. She is nice but too professional, she needs to loosen up but my parents seem to adore her as if she had a spell on them. After dinner I decide to give her a chance so my parents can get off my back. So I set a date for Saturday, 3 days from now.
A week goes by and no matter how many times I go out with Juliette; I can't stop thinking about Lily. No matter how many times I try to go to sleep, I always dreamt about the same thing or should I say the same person. Lily's all I can think about. I need to see her; I'm driving myself crazy. Would it be weird if I showed up at where I dropped her off? Fuck it.
