Dean went and put the bag with the bunny in his room then rejoined us in the main room. "Hey Dean, why don't you hang out with Hannah for a while? I need to go do something real quick." He nodded in understanding and I headed to my room. I needed to come up with something to give her for her birthday. I couldn't come up with anything. I needed something. Suddenly, Dean knocked on my door.
"Hey, I'm putting Hannah to bed. You come up with anything?" He asked.
"No. I'll see what I come up with in the next few minutes. Don't go to bed when you're done though. I need to talk to you." He nodded and left. I kept thinking and thinking, but I still came up with nothing. Dean came back with two bags in his hand and pulled up a seat.
"Still no luck?" He asked.
"Nothing. This is a lot harder than I thought." I commented.
"Well lucky for you, I got something for you to give her." He pulled a bunny out of a bag, but instead of being the one she left at her old house, it was one that was white and had spots the shade of purple she loved. It was perfect.
"That's perfect. Thanks, Dean. I think we should give them to her tonight before she falls totally asleep. I think we both could use beds." He nodded. I pulled out a piece of blank paper and wrote her a note to include with mine. We took them over to her room. She wasn't asleep yet.
"What's up, guys?" She asked.
"You're birthday is tomorrow and our presents should be opened tonight." I explained.
"It's already December? Wow. Whose do I open first?" She asked.
"Dean's." I said in reply. She took the box he put in front of her, and opened it. Her eyes lit up and I swore she was going to scream.
"Dean! You got me Hop back?" She asked excitedly.
"Sorta. I had to get you a new one since there's no way I'll live through going back there, but it's the same one you described to us."
"Thank you, thank you, thank you... What's yours, Sam?"
"Open it and find out. I can't top Dean's but I hope you still like it." I stated as I handed it to her. She opened it and the smile on her face made me feel so good.
"I love it, Sam. Thank you." She replied.
"Dean, I have one more part to my gift, but can you give me a minute? I still really need to talk to you, and I know it's getting late. I'll make it fast." I told Dean.
"Take your time. I'm in no rush, Sam." Dean said sincerely and left the room.
"What's your other part?" She asked eagerly. I handed her the note. She unfolded it and began reading. She was pretty good at reading and only asked me about a few words she didn't know what they meant or how to pronounce.
Hannah,
You haven't been with us very long yet, only about 2 1/2 weeks, but Dean and I have never been happier. You are such a happy and smiling little kid and I'm happy to have you here. It's so sweet how you already think of us as dads when we aren't even technically family. You've been through a lot, and I know things still upset you sometimes. If you ever, and I mean ever need someone to talk to, or you need a shoulder to cry on, Dean and I are always available. We love you, Hannah. I love you, and I am proud to have such a sweet girl like you in my life. Happy birthday!
-Sam"Sammy, thank you. I love you so much. I can't thank you enough for being here for me. This is the best birthday ever." She replied. She was so happy.
"Sorry to get you all excited and everything, but now you have to go to sleep. Are you ok with your bunnies now? Do you still need us in here?" I asked. I was really hoping I'd get a bed.
"You guys can have beds. I'll be ok. Thanks. Goodnight, Sam. Tell Dean goodnight too."
"I will." I replied before kissing her on the forehead and leaving the room.
~Dean's POV~
"So, what's the big thing you need to talk about?" I asked him as he returned from her room.
"She's 6 now, and has practically no school under her belt. She had a tad bit of stuff taught to her from her parents, but they never took her to Pre-K or Kindergarten. She needs at least some education so she can read well and write and do some math. I wanted to know what you wanted to do about that." He explained.
"Sam, I know she is ours, but at the same time, she's kinda not ours. We won't be able to enroll her anywhere. It's too risky of her parents finding her." I said. "I agree that school is important, but it's just not safe."
"Then what if I teach her when I have extra time between cases?" Sam asked.
"If you're up to doing that, then sure, that works." I replied. That could totally work and Sam was super smart.
"Ok. That's all I had to talk about." He stated and headed towards his room.
"Wait. I had something I needed to talk to you about." I started. He nodded telling me to continue. "You explained why you were overwhelmed earlier, but is any of that because of you feeling guilty about me getting hurt?" I asked. He sat down across from me and replied.
"What do you think, Dean? Of course I feel that way. This is all because.." He paused, checking to be sure she wasn't listening. "Because I made you stop. By saving Hannah, it caused me to have to be with her and not out fighting the demons with you. I almost got you killed, Dean." He explained.
"I know, Sam. I get that, but you love her right?" I asked.
"Yeah."
"Well, if you hadn't had me stop, she'd probably be dead right now. You saved the sweetest little kid and I just got a little banged up. You saved her life, Sammy. Don't feel guilty about that. I'm fine and your arm is healing. I'm proud of you, little brother." I replied. I never do the whole chick flick moment thing, but this was an exception.
"Thanks, Dean. Is that all you needed to talk about?" He asked. "Cause I'd love to go enjoy a bed."
"Yeah. That's it. Goodnight." I replied and headed to bed myself.
"Goodnight." Sam replied.
