I was let back after a short wait. "Hello, Sam." She said as I walked in.
"Hello, ma'am. Thank you for convincing Dean. I just want it to be a surprise."
"No problem. Here you go." She stated as she handed me a red folder with papers in it. I opened it and saw the official document that told us Dean was the official parent of Hannah. I smiled brightly. I was so happy that she was finally ours. I told her thank you and headed out. I hid them in my room for the time being and hung out with Dean and Hannah. Once Hannah was in bed, I talked to Dean.
"Hey, I meant to inform you... Today is Hannah's birthday." I commented.
"Sam, I didn't get her anything. Why didn't you remind me?" Dean stated, getting slightly mad that I didn't remind him.
"Don't worry. I got her something for you. Just give me a sec to get mine and yours and we'll give them to her." Dean nodded.
I returned with a bag that had a couple of easy to read books and another little stuffed animal for her and the red folder. We walked into Hannah's room. She was still awake.
"Happy Birthday!" Dean and I said in unison. I gave her mine first. She took the paper out of the bag and a huge smile appeared on her face.
"Thank you! I can practice reading and I love stuffed animals." She replied. I handed her the folder.
"This is from Dean." I told her. She opened it and looked at me confused.
"Is this what I think it is?" She asked. "You know I'm still not the best reader." I nodded.
"The last name is different but we use different last names around here so we don't get in big trouble." I was pretty sure she read it right. She got up and hugged Dean tightly.
"What is it?" Dean asked. "Sam didn't tell me what it is. He got it for me."
"They're adoption papers." She answered excitedly.
"What?!" He asked excitedly. "You were able to adopt her?"
"No. You were. Only one of us can technically adopt her since we aren't a married couple. It's some law thing. It's complicated. Anyways. You adopted her." I explained. He grabbed the folder off the bed and looked at it.
"Did you just forge my signature?" He asked with a chuckle.
"No. You signed it. It's what you actually signed yesterday. I asked her to convince you it was extra papers you had to sign. You are now Hannah's father." I told him. I was happy for all of us-that Hannah was officially ours, and extra happy for him. Hannah was so excited and happy. She wouldn't let go of him.
"Hear that, Hannah? I'm now officially your dad." Dean told her happily.
"What about Sammy?" She asked sadly.
"Hannah, honey. Dean is your official dad. They couldn't let both of us be your dads. Laws are complicated." I explained.
"Does that mean you're leaving?" She asked fearfully.
"No. Not at all, honey. It's just technical law stuff. I'm still staying here and you can still call me daddy. Nothing is changing other than the fact that by law Dean is your dad. Nothing else has changed, ok?" She nodded.
"Thanks for becoming my official daddy, Dean. You're the best! I love you both." She stated with a smile.
"We love you too, Hannah." Dean answered. We put her back to bed then headed out of her room. I put the documents somewhere safe then went back to the main room. "Sam, why didn't you tell me that's what I signed? Why did you make her convince me it was something else?" He questioned. He still seemed slightly mad.
"Because she told me it could only be one of us. I know how much she adores you and how great you are with her. I wanted it to be you. I wanted to surprise Hannah, and I knew you probably wouldn't have signed it if I had told you what it really was." I explained.
"I just don't get why you had it be me. You found her, you do so much better with her than me, you were the first one she called daddy, and you're the one who saved her in the first place." He told me.
"Dean, I don't care that I saved her or that I found her. You are the one she loves the most. She hates making you mad more than anyone else, you sang to her to get her to sleep, you were there for her when I was in hell, and you are the one she looks up to the most. " I explained. "Don't feel bad, or be mad, please. I just wanted her to be adopted by us and have the person who is her dad be the best one she can have."
"I'm not mad. I was just wondering. Don't doubt that she loves you though. She doesn't love me any more than she loves you. She looks up to you too. You should see the way she looks at you when you teach her-she thinks you're the greatest person in the world." Dean added. "I'm happy you picked me, I'm just saying you didn't have much of a reason to choose me."
"I know she loves me. Thanks. Well, either way, we have a daughter who is actually our daughter now."
"Yep. Best day ever!" Dean replied. I nodded and we went to bed. I fell asleep comfortably. Life was semi-normal for once. Hannah was ours permanently and we had an adorable little 9 year old as our daughter.
A/N I hope you all enjoyed this story. That's the end. I'm about to start publishing another book that's unrelated to this one. It's all drafted out, I'm just adjusting a few details here and there. Please please please, if you see this, comment about this book and keep your eyes peeled for my next one. It will be called "A Sudden Spark". I'm really hoping it gets more views and votes than this one did. :) thanks to those of you who read this book and this long author's note.
