I sat at the bar drinking my beer, I wanted to be alone I guess. Being in this bar with Sam and Eve was just too much. Too many things could go wrong. I was about to start thinking over the long list of things that could go wrong for the fifth time in my head when Jo walked over and started the jukebox. I couldn't help but watch as she grabbed the dishes off of a table and placed them down near me. There was something about her. Something innocent and pure, but also she was kind of a smart ass. Almost how I remember Eve being when we were kids. Before all the witch shit.
"What?" She asked when she turned around and saw me staring.
I was not really sure what to say so I commented on her song choice.
"R.E.O. Speed wagon?" I asked her.
"Damn right R.E.O." She said as she walked over to me.
"Kevin Cronin sings it from the heart." She said.
"He sings it from the hair. There's a difference." I replied then took another sip of my drink.
She looked like she wanted to say something but then looked around. She stopped when she found her mom who was standing a few feet behind her but was not paying much attention to us.
"That profile you have Ash looking for? Your mom died the same way. Didn't she?" She asked.
"The fire in Sam's nursery?" She added on when she did not get a response out of me.
"Look Jo, it's kind of a family thing." I told her hoping she would drop it.
I really did not need her prying around in this.
"Eve knows what's going on." She said to me.
I could not tell if she was trying to reason with me or she was jealous.
"Eve's kind of family." I told her.
Which was true. We did grow up together. But I couldn't help but feel bad when she looked hurt by my words.
"Look I could help." She told me.
"I'm sure you could, but we got to handle this one ourselves." I told her really hoping she would stop asking questions but knowing deep down that was unlikely.
"Besides, if I ran off with you, I think your mother might kill me." I told her half hoping it would make her feel better and the other half it being the truth.
And if she didn't kill me Eve definitely would. Her mom finally noticed that the two of us were talking and gave me a strange look. I smiled back at her trying to reassure her that everything was all-good. It was not until right after I did this that I realized how weird it must have looked.
"You're afraid of my mother?" She asked me with her own smile on her face.
"I think so." I answered her truthfully.
"What are you two talking about?" Eve asked as she sat down next to me and wrapped her arm around my neck.
"Nothing important." I told her.
"Well actually" Jo started to say but thankfully Sam appeared at just the right time to stop whatever was just about to happen.
"We got a match, we got to go." Sam said as he ran up with a handful of papers.
"Look at that Dean, it's time to go." Eve said to me.
It was obvious she did not want to spend another second here. Or did not want me to spend another second here.
"All right Jo, see you later." I said to her as I got up to leave.
"It was nice to meet you." Eve said as she followed me out.
"What the hell was that?" I asked Eve the second we were in the car.
"I don't know what you're talking about." She responded.
"Like hell you don't. Why were you being so rude to Jo?" I asked her.
"Why do you care?" She responded.
"Dude, don't answer that." Sam said to me.
"Stay out of this!" We both yelled at Sam.
"Look Jo is a friend and an ally, we can't burn that bridge." I said to her.
"I'm going to sleep. Wake me when we get there." She told me before lying down in the back seat.
"Yes mam." I replied.
