I followed Sam out of the room. At first, I could not see what was happening because there were so many people in the room.

"All clear." One of the doctors said.

I looked over to Sam who was huddled in the doorway, tears filled his eyes. "No." He said.

"Still no pulse." The nurse said.

There was another cry that came from the corner of the room. I looked over to see Eve was standing there with her hand over her mouth and tears in her eyes. I had no idea how long she had been standing there. I had not noticed her when I entered.

"Okay, let's go again, 360." The doctor ordered.

"Charging." The nurse said.

I finally made my way around everyone to see a ghostly figure floating over my body.

"You get the hell away from me." I said as I ran to the bed and tried to scare the thing away.

"I said get back!" I yelled.

I looked around for help, but I knew I was not going to get any. I did notice that Sam was no longer crying but now looked confused. I turned back to the spirit and tried to grab it. I was not able to grab it, but I did scare it away. Once it was gone the monitors slowed and everyone seemed to calm down.

"We have a pulse. We're back into sinus rhythm." The nurse said but I did not care.

I ran out into the hallway looking for the spirit. Sam seemed to follow me into the hallway. I walked back over to him to stand by his side.

"Don't worry, Sammy. I'm not going anywhere. I'm getting that thing before it gets me. It's some kind of spirit, but I could grab it. And if I can grab it, I can kill it." I told him.

I could not help but smile when Sam looked over in my direction with the same confused look on his face that Eve had when she could sense me or whatever.

I did not get much time to think about if he could hear me or not much longer because someone started yelling in the hall.

"Now what?" I said as I followed the sound of the voice.

"Somebody talk to me! Say something, please!" She yelled when I approached her she turned to look at me.

"Can you see me?" I asked her.

"Yeah." She answered.

"All right, just, uh, calm down. What's your name?" I asked her.

"Tessa." She answered.

"Okay, good, Tessa, I'm Dean." I told her.

"What's happening to me? Am I dead?" She asked.

"That sort of depends." I said to her not sure exactly how I should answer her.

"Why don't we get you back to your room and we can talk there." I told her hoping that seeing her own body would help her make sense of all of this.

When we got to her room she did not want to enter. We stood outside watching her as a woman sat holding her hand. It looked like the machines were keeping her alive.

"I don't understand. I just came in for an appendectomy." She said to me.

"Well, I hate to bear bad news, but I think there were some complications." I said to her.

"It's just a dream, that's all. It's just a very weird, unbelievably vivid dream." She tried to convince herself.

"Tessa. It's not a dream." I told her.

"Then what else could it be?" She asked me.

"You ever heard of an out of body experience?" I asked her.

"What are you, some new agey guy?" She asked me sarcastically.

"You see me messing with crystals or listening to Yanni? It's actually a very old idea. Got a lot of different names: Bilocation, crisis apparition, fetches... I think it's happening to us. And if it is, it means that we're spirits of people close to death." I tried to convince her.

"So, we're going to die?" She asked as worry filled her.

"No. Not if we hold on. Our bodies can get better, we can snap right back in there and wake up." I told her.

I just hoped that what I had just said was the truth.
