Derek's Pov

I had a feeling that something wasn't right. I didn't know why, but I just... I knew. The phone call I got from Lauren just seemed to confirm my suspicions. "Derek... Derek..." She was upset; crying and sobbing. "Emily. Emily is... she..." She was hysterical.

"Babe, calm down. Take a deep breath." She did and from the sounds that followed, she also blew her nose. "Okay?" It was a rhetorical question; one she did not answer. "So, what about Emily?" I could tell that she was fighting to hold back her emotions.

"Emily's been shot!" I didn't know what to say; I was in shock. This couldn't be happening; not again. After what Doyle did to her, I was terrified that this would happen; that she'd be vulnerable. She convinced me however, that she would be fine. I shouldn't have listened to her. Why her? Why Emily? "Derek, are you still there?" I forced myself to answer.

"Um. Yeah, I'm here. How is she?" She had to be okay. I mean, it's Em; she's practically indestructible.

Lauren's Pov

I had called Derek as soon as Emily had gone into surgery, so I didn't have to wait long for him to arrive at the hospital. I was sat alone in the corridor on one of those blue padded chairs, which really weren't as comfortable as they were meant to be. I thought about how I felt when I lost my dad, and my mom and I really didn't want to lose any more of my family.

"Lauren?" I heard Derek before I saw him. I turned and saw him standing at the end of the corridor. He saw me as I stood and he ran straight towards me, allowing me to throw my arms around him. We just stood there in the middle of the corridor, as he let my cry into his chest. "You heard anything?" I hadn't, but I kept telling myself that no news was good news.

"No. Not yet." I pulled away from him, keeping a tight hold on his hand. I needed him to be here right now; not as a colleague, but as my boyfriend. I just wanted Derek to stay with me and tell me that everything will be okay and that Emily will be fine.

"Hey, you know how strong Emily is. She's a fighter, and she will get through this." He wrapped his arm around my shoulder and we sat back down on the row of blue chairs, just waiting for someone to tell us something.

Derek's Pov

Lauren was almost asleep on my shoulder. She looked so peaceful, but I knew that what was going on in her head was anything but. "Miss Stone?" I nudged Lauren to wake her and we both stood to talk to the tall, red haired nurse who was stood before us.

"Um, yes. What is it? How is she?" I wanted to know how Emily was, but no where near as much as Lauren did; that was clear. And it made me wonder just how well the two of them actually knew each other.

"We managed to remove the bullet, but she lost a lot of blood." Was that good or bad news? "She is stable at the moment, but it is vital that she gets a blood transfusion. There is an issue however, in the fact that Emily has a rare blood condition meaning that it won't be easy to find a donor." Ok, so all we had to do was find a suitable match, and everything would be fine.
