Chapter 4

*lauren's pov*

Derek and I had managed to avoid each other for the majority of the case. He made sure he was in the field, while I remained at the BAU with Reid. It was hard; I couldn't stop thinking about him and I was sure that Reid and Garcia had picked up on it. Reid's cell started ringing and he picked up almost immediately. "Yes. Of course. That's great." He then put the phone down just as quickly as he'd answered it.

"They get him?" I was referring to the serial killing psychopath that had been on a spree for the last two weeks.

"They did." I breathed a sigh of relief. "The sheriff has taken him into custody and the team is heading back here." I didn't know what to do; stay or go.

"I guess I should go then." I turned to leave.

"You could wait for the team to get back. I'm sure they'll want to thank you." Okay, so maybe I would stay; for a little while at least.

We'd finally caught the guy; a high school science teacher who'd suffered a mental breakdown after his older brother (who had abused him when they were younger) died three weeks previous.

I was now stood in the elevator on the way up to the office. I should be happy; glad we'd caught the murdering son of a bitch, but I wasn't. I was dreading having to talk to lauren. Now that the case was over, I didn't have an excuse anymore.

The doors opened as we reached our floor and we all stepped out of the elevator. As I made my way to my desk, I glanced up and saw Lauren standing with Reid in the conference room. They were gathering up all of the files. She looked up and saw me; there was no getting out of it.

As I entered the conference room, I gestured for Reid to leave and he did. Lauren knew I was there, but tried her hardest to ignore me. "Lauren, we need to talk!" I could feel the others staring at us. When I walked into this room, I had no idea what I was going to say, but right then I suddenly realised what I wanted.

So, now he wanted to talk. I wondered if I could get out, but Derek was blocking the door. I suppose I'd just have to hear him out. "Go ahead." I stopped putting the files into boxes and gave him my full attention.

"I really enjoyed that night last week, before the case started." There was a pause. "I've been terrified of having this conversation ever since I saw you at the crime scene." He took a deep breath and moved towards me. "The morning after that night, I had every intention of seeing you again and that hasn't changed." I was surprised. I was certain he was going to tell me that he wanted nothing more to do with me. "There's no reason we can't see each other." Was he being serious? Oh God. I didn't prepare myself for this.

"Are you saying what I think you're saying?" I needed to be sure before I made any commitments.

"How's this?" Derek grabbed my waist and smacked his lips against mine. I heard gasps coming from outside. Derek pulled away, keeping his arm around my waist. We looked out over the office to see a row of shocked faces looking back at us.
