Chapter 7
Derek's pov
There was something going on and I couldn't put my finger on it. Garcia was briefing us on the case; five dead young women, raped and asphyxiated in their homes. The locations ranged from Ohio to DC to New York. There was even two other cases in London, England with the same MO; that explained why Em was here. But Emily wasn't paying attention; she was more focused on Lauren, and Lauren was just as focused on Emily. It was as if they knew each other.
"We're off to New York. Wheels up in 30!" I was snapped back to reality by Hotch's voice. The others all left the conference room, Lauren last. I reached for her hand and pulled her back.
"Derek, what are you doing?" She was really annoyed with me, but I gave her a little smile and she relaxed.
"What's going on with you and Emily? Do you have some sort of history with her?" She looked at the floor and that told me all I needed to know. They did know each other.

Lauren's pov
Shit. I didn't want Derek to know about my past with Emily; I didn't want anyone to know. Too late now though. But just because he was going to find out, didn't mean he had to hear it from me. "Ask Emily. I think you should hear it from her, but I would appreciate it if you could wait until I've spoken to her." Derek wasn't happy, but accepted defeat and left the conference room. I couldn't see his face, but I swear Derek said something to Emily as he passed her.
I turned; my aim was to head for the jet, but I knew that wasn't gonna happen when I saw Emily coming towards me. I'd envisaged how this conversation would go over a million times and not once did it occur to me that it would happen here in the BAU. "I think we need to talk, don't you?" She didn't look to happy, but we had to get this out of the way.
"Hello Emily. How've you been?" It wasn't much, but it was a start. I took a deep breath and waited to hear what she had to say.
"Not bad. It's good to see you again Lauren. I mean, look at you; you're all grown up." What? Did she think I would still be that little girl who was so dependant on her parents? Well I wasn't!
"What did you expect?" She reached for my hand and I flinched away from her. "You don't know me anymore, Em. I chose this job because of you. I have an amazing boyfriend and a beautiful daughter. Everything I am is because of you. You. The mother who left us to go undercover and didn't even bother to call when you got out. Some role model you turned out to be." I didn't realise until that moment just how much pent up anger I had towards Emily.
"Lauren, listen to me!" But I didn't want to listen. I didn't care; not anymore.
"I don't want to hear it. If you want to tell Derek about this, then tell him." I walked out without another word.
