{Chapter Thirteen} "I never thought I'd see my daughter here." I turned around slowly to see my mother standing in front of me. My eyes filling with tears at the sight before me and I flung myself into her arms. "I can't believe I'm hugging one of my daughters right now."
"I knew it wasn't real." I laughed between tears as I pulled away from her, her hands lingering on my cheeks. "You're so beautiful, I can't believe I can finally touch you. Just seeing you and not being able to touch you is very frustrating."
"Why are you here if I'm dead?" I looked down as I touched her pendant around my neck and then looked back up at her. "I'm sorry for failing you, I wasn't strong enough." She sighed and grabbed my hands, walking with me back into the empty hospital halls.
"You know, I never thought that one of my daughters would give up." My mother stopped and turned around, touching my face. "You know that boy? Khalid? I can't help but feel pride every time I see him, he just has this gift to him."
"I know right? He doesn't deserve this, he doesn't deserve what I have done to him." My mother pulled me toward her and hugged me tightly as I cried out. She ran her hands up and down comfortingly and pulled away from me with a smile on her lips.
"I'm here with you because you aren't dead." My lips parted as I looked at her in shock and widened my eyes slowly. "I wasn't kidding when I said that Khalid has a gift, he was chosen for you for a reason."
She grabbed my hand and led me toward the emergency room to see Khalid still there. "Look at him, still not willing to let you go." She turned around to face me and grabbed my arms. "I told your father many years back that Khalid will keep you alive."
"That's why when he touched me I felt the pull?" I asked her confused, not understanding where she wanted to go with this. How will Khalid keep me alive? "Think Winter, I know you can. You'll figure it out." She shook my hands as she tightened her grip. "Think, just think."
"Winter..." At the sound of his voice I turned around and flung myself at him, ignoring some of the wires that were removed and the beeping machine. I tightened my hold around his neck and sobbed hard.
"I can't, I can't." I shook my head as hot tears ran down my face, my hands gripping his neck as my body shook from the sobs escaping my throat. "I don't know how long I can do this, I lost hope ,I lost faith, I just can't anymore. I can't, I can't."
Khalid hugged me tighter as I soaked him up with my tears but he didn't mind. He muttered soothing words to me as he ran his hands up and down my back. "Don't say that, you are strong, you can do this and you will do this."
He pulled me away from him and cupped my face in his hands, brushing my tears away. "Tell me how, just tell me how." I pouted my bottom lip as I sniffed, my teeth sucking on my bottom lip. "Tell me how to be strong."
"Our love will keep you strong, us strong." He grabbed my hands in his and gave it a squeeze. "You just have to trust that it will." I looked down at our hands and then back at him as I sniffed, leaning my head on his chest as he pulled me closer.
Khalid brushed my hair softly, his steady heartbeats singing me lullaby as I slowly drifted into a peacefully sleep. "Our love will keep me strong."
My eyes filled with tears as that day flashed before my eyes and I snapped my eyes open, tears running down my cheeks. "I knew you could do it, you just had to trust it will." She stepped away from me and squeezed my hand. "Take a look."
The machine that was dead slowly started to beep as the frequency of the heartbeats appeared on the machine. Khalid pulled away from my body and looked at the machine in shock, before looking back at me. "Winter? Baby can you hear me?"
