I tapped my foot as I looked out at the scene before me. I had just finished going over the crime scene and waiting for someone to come help me. Or at the very least show up. The phone finally picked up."Hey, Rose."
"Hey, Barry," I said, feeling my mouth stretch across my face with a stern expression. "You're my partner right?"
"Yeah..."
I sighed, "I'm looking at a dead body right now. Police are conducting interviews. Take a guess what I'm doing right now. Without my partner."
"I'll be right there." I hung up my phone and ducked back under the yellow tape in front of me. I wanted to make one last run through before Barry showed up to make sure I didn't miss anything. The last thing I would need is for Barry to find something important and end up getting all the credit. Captain Singh stepped next to me.
"What are we looking at here, Parker?" he asked. I grabbed my clipboard from nearby and handed it to him. He glanced it over before handing it back to me. "And where is Allen?"
"Hey, I'm sorry I'm late," Barry said as he ducked under the tape. Singh and I walked past him and went over to the other side of the tape.
"Do a little fall shopping, Mr. Allen?" Singh asks as Joe comes over and pulls a tag off of Barry's coat. He apologizes for being late. Barry starts looking around the scene as Singh continues, "Alright, Allen, let's see if what Parker found is what you can find."
"I downloaded the surveillance footage off the video camera. Looks like only one perp." I shook my head at Joe.
"It was six guys that did the job. Not one," I told them. Barry nodded his head before pointing out the footprints on the ground.
"There are six sets of tracks. They're all crossing each other. Six sets of footprints. Six guns stolen. We should be looking for a crew."
I added, "And they all wore the same shoe in the same size. Men's tens."
"Just like you, Captain," Barry said. "Not that you're a suspect, sir. I-" I shook my head as Singh rolled his eyes and walked away. I came back over to Barry's side and kneeled down next to him, carefully.
"Where the hell were you, Barry? And don't use excuses. I'm seriously worried about you." Barry stood up and I followed as he started looking over the rest of the crime scene.
"Why should you? It isn't like we know each other."
I sighed, "I'm trying to get to know you. I have a hard time getting to know people as it is and the fact that you never show up on time or stick around long at work kind of makes it harder." Barry turned to give me an apologetic look.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I'll finish up here, if you want to go get coffee or something."
"Do you want anything?" I ask. Barry quickly told me his order before I made my way out of the crime scene. It was going to be harder than I thought it would to figure out what he was hiding.
"But nothing would be worth doing if it was too easy," the words my father said to me as I checked myself off the list of the people at the scene. I had promised myself I was going to figure out what was going on. No matter how hard it would be.
..............................
It took Barry several minutes once we got back to the precinct to get to work. Joe had to pull him aside to talk to him. He had given me that look my father gave me right before my sister was going to get a lecture. I knew better than to stick around for the show. When Barry came back, he looked tired. I wordlessly handed him some of the evidence to process. He took it over to the centrifuge for testing. As I sit on the other side of the room, I hear banging.
