"Your Savior is here!" Jevan yelled as he came up the stairs the next morning. "I brought over all of my materials, and you better love me because I stopped and bought emergency junk food and coffee, not from Starbucks since I know you don't like that place too much."
"Thank you so much for coming over!" I exclaim sighing with relief.
"You know I always got your back when it comes to fashion," he states setting down the coffee and junk food on my dresser and the materials down on my bed.
Yesterday when I found the dress torn, I wasn't too concerned until I realized that I promised Izzie. Even though I don't like those girls, a promise is a promise, and for me at least I never break a promise. After that, I freaked out a bit because I didn't know what to do. I couldn't go back to the mall because I didn't need anybody I knew see me buying a DRESS. That would be so bad. But if I try to make a dress, it would be long and all black, and I'm pretty sure nobody wants to wear a black dress to a wedding. I'm also pretty sure I would get chewed out if I wore only black slacks and a white blouse. That left me with only one option.
I needed Jevan my Savior.
"Come on. Come on. Pick up. Pick up," I muttered into my phone looking out of my window.
"Jevan the fashion queen. What's your problem Kade?" he asked me laughing into his phone.
"I need you to make me a dress," I said to him. There was a moment of silence before he spoke into the phone.
"You want me to make you a dress?" he asked me in disbelief. "Are you serious?"
"Yeah yeah I know I know. Kade is asking someone to make her a dress. I'm serious though. I need you to make me a dress," I tell him in all seriousness.
"Oh my god I can't believe it!" Jevan screams into his phone making me cringe and pull my cell phone away from my ear. "Kade, the Lady of Darkness, wants ME to make her a dress! I never thought this day would come. I thought this day would never come! That's one more thing to cross off my bucket list." In the background, I can hear him rustling in his room. I can hear him muttering to himself as he unzips a bag of some sorts and shoves what he needs in there. I also hear a faint meowing coming from his cat, Dark Moon, as she comes into his room.
"Tell your cat I said hey," I tell him as he hasn't hung up with me yet.
"I will. Hold on a minute," he says moving his phone onto his shoulder muffling what I could hear somewhat. "Mom! I'm missing three rolls of silk! Did you take them from me?"
"Yes honey," I heard her muffled reply. "I was making something for your sister. They're in the dining room if you need them."
"Thanks mom. Hey Kade, I'm on my way. I'll be there in 15 minutes tops," he says going down the stairs. I then hear more muffled talking. "Never mind. I've got a change of plans. How does tomorrow sound?"
"Sounds good to me," I said to him. "See you tomorrow."
Flash forward to today and here he is. Right now Jevan's sitting on my bed pulling roll upon roll of silk out of his knapsack. He seems to own every single color available, and he surprises me as he pulls even more colors out.
"How much silk do you have?" I ask in shock as he pulls out even more silk if that's even possible.
"I have 23 rolls in total, but it's not all silk. Some of these are silk, but there is also chiffon, velvet, and organza. My mom has even more at home in her craft room, but she has all the basic colors while I have all the exotic ones," he informs me arranging his rolls according to what type of material they are. I watched with curiosity as he did so because it always amazed me when he did this. Don't get me wrong here. I do make my own clothes but with clothes from garage sales or thrift shops that I cut up to the style I wanted or added embellishments like studs. I've never made anything from scratch.
Jevan is a different story. Since his dad walked out on him, his mom, and his younger sister after he came out, it was harder to pay bills. His mom was working three jobs, and him and his sister were doing little lemonade stands like most kids did. Jevan was 13 at this time, so he couldn't get a job to help his mom. Eventually, his mom rented out the attic to some twins in their early twenties who needed to save money before getting an apartment. With them living there, his mom was able to quit her weekend job.
Now that she had her weekends free, she ended up wanting to do something to take up her time. She already knew how to sew and such, so she started doing little things like fix clothes or make dresses for girls around the neighborhood. Soon, more people came to her as people were praising her work. During this time, Jevan watched her work, so when she needed help eventually, she got Jevan to help while she quit her second job leaving her with one and sewing.
As of now, she sews full time with Jevan and is teaching his younger sister who is 11 slowly. The twins still live in the attic and provide rent, but they are going to move out soon and into an apartment complex.
"I see," I say to him looking at his collection of colors. "What material are you going to use for my dress?"
"I haven't decided yet," he says looking up at me. "Do you have the original dress?"
"Not anymore."
"Did you throw it away? It would be good to look at it if you can get it out of the trash."
"I burned it. . ."
"You never make things easy do you?"
