"Yes mom. I just landed." I told my mom over the phone. She was so worried she thought the plane would crash. My mom worries about me too much.
"Okay honey. That is great! I'll call you tomorrow when you are all settled. Love you!" she said really quickly and then hung up on me. I sighed, looking for my luggage on the belt. Once I grabbed my three bags and then I looked for the nearest coffee shop.
Yeah, I know what you are thinking. Typical white American girl. The first thing she looks for in a new country is coffee. Yeah I just want a donut. I'm not a fan of coffee. I'll stick with tea thanks.
I walk in and get into line, order my glazed pastry and wait for it. I finally pay for it and walk out. Biting into it, I look for a poster with mine and my roommate's names. Oh sorry I can't believe I forgot to tell you why I am here in Australia.
Well technically my mom sent me to this weird foreign program for teenagers. I have no clue what is supposed to result in going but whatever. What really happens is me and another girl live with one of the program people for a year. A year. Yay.
Note the sarcasm.
One good thing is it is warm and not scorching hot like Michigan. You may think it wouldn't be bad there but the summers there are so humid and hot. I sigh and keep walking.
I see my name on a poster and quickly walk over to her.
"Um, hi," I say awkwardly. "I'm Charlotte, but you could call me Lottie."
"I'm Elizabeth. Please stay quiet until--," she paused to look at the poster she was holding. "Juliette gets here. And I will be calling you your birth name."
"Oh. Okay." I said shocked. I was a bit terrified of her. She was a whole foot taller than me, me being 5'5" that made me feel even smaller. She had short blonde hair and dull brown eyes, being the opposite of me. Mid-back length curly brown hair with blue tips and bright green eyes.
Her attitude is telling me this is going to be a long year.
I don't even know why I am here. I have done nothing wrong at home to be sent here. I mean, I have been in a couple fights at school and am sad a lot but why would this help?
"Oh, my god. I'm sorry I'm late. I couldn't find my bags. Hi, I'm Juliette." A tall, but not Elizabeth tall, blonde haired girl said with a New Zealand accent. She held out a hand to shake Elizibeth's, but she didn't grab it. She turned to me and I shook it quickly.
"C'mon enough chit-chat. Let's go." Elizabeth snapped at us. By the time we got our bags from the ground she was 20 feet in front of us.
"Was it something I said?" Juliette asked with a frown. I laughed.
"Nah she is just a Class-A bitch," I smiled and she laughed.
"Good thing you aren't. I'd die of fright," she laughed. "I'm sorry I didn't catch your name."
"My name is Charlotte, but call me Lottie," I told her. "I wont respond to you if you do. Looks like I wont listen to her for a year because she said I am to be called my birth name."
She scoffed, "Oh jeez. This is going to be hell. I can't believe my dad sent me here."
"I know, what is this even all about? My mom told me nothing," I asked she sighed.
"It is supposively supposed to give young teens class and responsibility. I perfectly classy," she said as she let out a loud burp. I laughed loudly.
"Psh. We are going to get along great," I said. We laughed as we quickly walked to catch up to Elizabeth.
