Chapter 12: Hope
The building is pitch black, and an eerie silence swarms through the air like smoke. Rose breaks the quiet with a gasp. “What was that?”
She asks the question even though she knows the answer. The buzzing, the green light...It was some version of The Doctor’s sonic screwdriver. And the hand that came out the crack, she felt some sort of magnetic pull to it. Like her heart was being tugged by an invisible string. During the whole thing, the only thing she had been thinking was that she wanted to touch that hand.
She shivers and realizes, she can’t feel Jack holding her arms anymore. “Jack?!” She yells out into the dark.
Silence responds with a bitter kiss on her ears.
“JACK!”
A panic rises in her throat and she digs into her pockets for her small flashlight. The small beam cuts through the dark like butter, and she sweeps it around until it lands on a massive pile of rubble.
Horror fills her at the sight of bloodily smeared stones, piles of collapsed roof and a she can see Jack’s arm sticking out from under a boulder.
A small perimeter of 4 feet of were she was standing is perfectly clear. Not even a speck of dust penetrates it. But the rest of the base is in ruins. All the equipment in pieces, and as Rose runs to the boulder, she slips in something wet.
Horror pounds through her veins like poison, and she looks down, expecting a pool of blood.
To her surprise, an inch or two away from her sneaker, is the remnants of a broken jar, and a severed hand lays in the glass.
She pries her eyes off of it and runs to jack.
She throws her weight at the boulder trying to shift it. A startled pain filled gasp starts and she dives down, digging through chunks of concrete until jack’s bruised bloodily face is revealed.
“Your Alive!” She looks down at his lower half, which is completely smashed by the boulder.
“Oh...Oh..No...Oh Jack...”
He starts to laugh, and in surprise Rose starts to cry. “I’m fine, honestly! Just get this thing off of me.”
Doubtfully Rose attempts to shift it again. Jack uses a few choice swearwords, and even screams once or twice. Every time a pain filled noise escaped his lungs, Rose would apologize a hundred times and try not to break up in tears.
Once the boulder is off, what remains of his legs becomes clear.
He looks down at himself in disgust. “You might want to turn off the flashlight.
This might gross you out.”
She rolls her eyes and waits to see what he means.
Suddenly his legs begin to inflate like a balloon, the wounds closing, and blood streaming back into the cuts.
She drops her flashlight in surprise, and it blinks out.
She swears and scrabbles around in the dark for the flash light. As she fingers the dirt, something cold and wet slides over her hand.
She screams and jumps to her feet. “Jack? Was that you?”
“Was what me?”
She backs up as a snarling noise seems to come from the darkness around her.
She jumps as the wet slimy thing runs over her neck.
“Jack stop it it’s not funny!”
His voice gets closer now. He must have stood up, somehow.
