Chapter 6: First light

A pink light fills Rose's vision. She tries to block it, but it hurts her eye too much. She opens it, and winces at the bright light on her face. A sunbeam from a crack in her floral curtains is penetrating the space. She shifts her position on her warm pillow, and drifts back to sleep. Suddenly her eyes fling open.

Her pillow is breathing.

She can hear a soft snoring, turns her head, and looks up. She's laying on The Doctor's lap, on the couch. His head is rolled back and he is fast asleep, his thin hand resting in her hair.

She lifts her own hand and gently pries his hand away, then slips off of him and lands cat like on the floor. She stands and looks at him.

In his sleep, he pulls his long legs up to his chest and curls up on the sofa, his hand hanging off gthe side and his mouth slightly agape. She smiles and considers waking him, but then decides he deserves some more sleep.

She walks into the kitchen and starts making tea quietly, carfeul not to chink the mugs together.

She walks back in and sets the steaming mug on the counter, then sips her own. She looks over at him asleep. His torn suit is shaking as he shivers.

She stands up, grabs her woolen blanket and carefully drapes it on top of him. The shivering ceases, and he tucks his head into the blanket, except his hair, which sticks out of the hole.

She jumps as her phone rings, nearly an hour later.

The Doctor lifts his head groggily, and watches as she plucks up the reciever. She puts her ear to the phone. "Hello?" She says.

An unfamiliar voice replies in a certified authoriative tone.

"Rose Tyler, this is TORCHWOOD."
