Chapter 11: Crack in the universe
“Mac, Lilly, Isacc, and Zane. Best of the best.”
Rose shakes each of the team in turn. Mac has long brown hair pinned on her head, leather jacket, and jeans. She has a loose demeanor and is currently chewing a piece of pink gum. sever guns are strapped to her waist.
Lilly is in a delicate purple dress, and her pin straight black hair falls around her shoulders. She has severe eyebrows and kind eyes.
Isacc is in a lab coat and his short brown hair is in a combover. in his left hand is a syringe, which Rose takes care to stay away from.
Then Zane, wearing a muscle shirt and jeans with several guns in his belt. His blonde hair sticks up and he looks almost bored.
“Rose Tyler, companion of The Doctor.” Says Zane. “Been hearing a LOT about you.”
Behind her, The meatacrisus doctor is wheeled in. She looks at Isacc. “You a doctor? Can you help him? He got tased and still hasn’t woken up.” He nods assuringly and takes him away with Lilly.
Jack takes of his trademark grey coat and lays it on the coatrack.
“Rose, there’s something you need to see, but we need to talk first.”
She nods, fear clogging her throat. He grabs her hand and pulls her to the far wall of the cavern. The whole place is criss crossed with wires and cables, gears and steampunk randomness.
“So they have the rift on this world as well?” She asks.
He turns around and doesn't say anything for a bit. “No. That’s what we need to talk about.”
Eventually after a lot of climbing around random alien tech and stopping at the coffee maker, they reach a flat stretch of wall with a massive crack in it.
The wall is connected with wires and what look like Rift energy detectors from old Torchwood.
The crack is nearly touching the floor, and Rose extends a hand to touch it.
Suddenly jack has her around the middle and pulls her away.
“Oi!”
“Don’t touch it.” He warns.
He lets go of her and she glares at him. “What is IT anyway?”
He picks up one of the wires, and fingers it all the way to where it connects to a small hub device.
He inspects it and comments. “Hmmm very active today.”
“Jack.” She says. “What is it.”
He sets down the device and grins.
“It’s a crack. A crack through space and time.”
“A crack?” Rose asks, delicately stepping away in fear. “What do you mean?”
Jack smiles. “I think this might just make your day. This crack? The other side of it, is in our old world.”
A shock as cold as dry ice settles into Rose’s stomach, and a lump forms in her throat like half swallowed food.
She opens her mouth, closes it, then feels a tear start down her face.
“So that’s how you got here? Through the crack?”
He gestures to a table and Rose see’s a large jar there. An all to familiar hand sits inside of the jar, bubbling with blue liquid.
“But thats-! Thats his hand! You have got his bloody ha-”
He stops her with a look. “It fell off that spaceship, I...Acquired it and now, it’s a Doctor detector.”
She looks at the jar confused. Several wires link the jar to the wall, and she asks. “Doctor Detector? What does that mean?”
He pats the jar. “The hand still has his DNA. Even if he regenerates, this baby can pick it up. See, his hand it trying to find it’s body again. The one that grew back is fully functional ya, but this guy.” He pats the jar again. “Misses master. It sends of radioactivity, harmless but it sets off the radar, when it gets close to him. And it has been going CRAZY ever since I came through the crack.”
She nods, excited. “But you knew the guys downstairs, and you said you got here and hour ago? Also what made you decide to jump into a glowing crack, and how did you find it anyway?”
He rolls his eyes. “I forgot how many questions you ask. Ok so, I was traveling around a bit after Gwen got pregnant, Not mine,” He ads at her expression. “And I always got my Doctor Detector with me. I was in this prison in London, checking out some Weavels, when I saw the crack. The hand went crazy, so I used my vortex manipulator to communicate through it. I talked to the team for a week, learning bout what it was, then I teleported inside. Inside the crack was this, suffocating nothing, then I showed up here a couple of hours ago. Hooked up the detector, and the levels are still rising.”
She walks up to the crack. “Was it making that noise earlier?” Rose asks.
Jack doesn't look up. “What noise?”
A deep humming was rising in pitch like...Like...
Rose steps back in shock as the crack widens, spilling a flood of white light.
She jumps back and stares in amazement as a foot wide gap shows an extremely blurry vision of what looks like an underground tunnel. A small green light is making the buzzing noise, and even though it looks different, Rose recognizes the device.
She can hear muffled voices, and Jack pulls her further away as the light creeps closer.
Suddenly a hand stretches out towards her, as if desperate to grab her. The arm is clothed in a tweed jacket, and has a small golden watch around the wrist. The hand scrabbles along the floor, then seems to sink into the floor like a projection. When it emerges, it’s holding something in a spotted handkerchief, then yanks back into the crack.
The hand is going berserk, and the glass is cracking as it vibrates.
The crack slams shut with an echoing BANG. And Rose and Jack’s terrified bemused faces are plunged into darkness.
