Watching Kelli cry because I don't love her was kind of embarrassing. Not for her, but for me.
Because I've tried my best to change and become a better, more tolerable, boyfriend.
But then the whole thing with Connie ruined everything and I've been more distant, scared that I'll give something away. And can't see her cry again. Not because of me.
Austin walks in the room as Kelli slowly fell asleep in my arms. "She stopped crying," he observes. "But she still has to take her medicine."
He shoots me a glare before storming out of the room and into the kitchen. I let out a sigh. I know he doesn't like me. I know that anything I say he will use against me. And I know that he wishes I'd never met Kelli.
She lets out a whimper beside me. "Please don't let him yell at me," she mutters sleepily.
I remove the hair from her face. She looks at me for a while before sleep starts to take over. Her eyes shut and although she looks peaceful, I know she's in pain.
I leave the room and stand at the door of the kitchen - where Austin was angrily looking for Kelli's medicine.
"You always ruin everything," he says harshly, and I know better than to try and defend myself. "You always make life harder for her and me. She actually likes you. And I don't get that. I don't get," he starts, turning to face me, "how she likes you, after everything you've put her through. After everything you've done to her, she still chooses you for some reason."
I don't say anything.
After a while, he goes back to looking for her meds. "I don't understand. I don't want to understand. Every time, you make her cry, or every time she feels like she wants to kill herself, it's mostly because of you."
Ouch.
He finally finds something but I can tell it's not what he was looking for because he frowns at the bottle.
"There's a bottle of iboprofin in the room. I was thinking she could take that."
His head snaps up. "Iboprofin," he repeats. "As in Iboprofin the medicine? The medicine she's allergic to?"
My face must have blanked or something because he shoves past me. "You're such an idiot."
He storms in the room. "Where?"
"I put it on the nightstand."
"There is nothing on the nightstand," he says frantically searching the room.
Then he stares at Kelli. Her peaceful face is the only thing keeping him from yelling at her. "Do you think..."
I nod. "I honestly think she has them. They can't be too far, seeing as though she can't go anywhere."
Austin takes a seat beside her, careful not to disturb. "Hey," he says in a soft voice. Her eyes slowly, it feels like hours before her eyes actually open.
"Are you here to scream at me again?"
Pain flashes through his eyes. They've always been close. They've always had no problem talking to each other or getting along.
Until I came along. I ruined everything. I should've listened to Connie and stayed away.
He shakes his head. "No," is all he says.
She stares at the ceiling for a while, biting her lip. She reaches for her side pocket, wincing, and pulls out a small bottle. Iboprofin.
She hands to him. "I saw it laying there while I was upset," she says softly. "I thought about using it."
"Did you?"
Thankfully, she shakes her head. "No, I fell asleep before I could."
"That's good, right?" Austin asks cautiously and she nods, looking out the bedroom window.
Austin lets out a sigh. "Listen, we need to talk about what happened," he says and Kelli shakes her head.
"I don't want to talk to you," she says in a quiet but firm voice. "Not now."
He wipes a falling tear off her cheek. "I want to apologize for the way I treated you," he says anyways. "I made you upset and its my fault you haven't taken your medicine."
She doesn't look at him. "I'm really tired, Austin. We can talk about this later."
He reluctantly agrees and places a kiss against her forehead.
My phone vibrates in my pocket and I head outside to pick it up. "Hey," I say.
"Cody," she says. "Where are you? You said you would be here by now."
I sigh, running a hand through my hair. "I am with Kelli. I can't just leave."
"You haven't told her," she says, more a statement than a question. "Have you?"
I don't answer that question. "I'll be there as soon as possible," I say before hanging up.
I turn around to see Austin, his arms crossed over his chest. ""What?" I ask harshly.
"What was that about?" he asks, surprisingly calm.
"None of your business," I mutter, shoving the phone into my pocket. "And what are you doing here, anyways?"
He shrugs. "I live here. I saw you walk out and knew it couldn't have been anything good so I followed you."
I just glare at him.
"Look," he says, fixing the cuffs of his shirt. "I know you cheat on Kelli. You know you cheat on Kelli. And she knows you cheat on her. I don't know what this was about but I know it cant be good. So I am going to give you a chance to leave without punching you in the face."
"I am not leaving her. Not like you did."
His gaze wavers but his expression remains the same - calm, as if everything in the world is great. "I came back. You are not coming back. She's not going to put up with you anymore and I wont let her."
"Is that a threat?" I ask evenly.
He shakes his head. "No. I'm giving you a chance to leave, so you can go back to whoever you were just on the phone with. I won't tell her about the phone call or how freakishly suspicious it sounded. Just leave."
I frown. "She is my girlfriend."
"You sound like you are trying to convince yourself of that," he says, walking back in the house.
"She is pregnant," I blurt out.
He turns around, his eyes narrowed. "Who?"
I head towards my car, not being able to stand the interrogation anymore. It isn't any of his business and I don't want to hurt Kelli. I am leaving because I want to, not because he promised I wouldn't get punched in the face.
I already said too much.
