Y/N's POV:
The lights opened and got clearer as I started to wake up. But it backed down to shadows of gray. I lay there, my eyes open and the things around me moving in slow motion, but getting faster and more in time with what was going on. I sat up and placed my hand on my head. There was darkness around me with a little bit of white light here and there.
Footsteps echoed from down some stairs and I found myself looking over a wooden railing to see golden light shimmering up from down stairs. I walked down quietly, looking for the danger. I felt the mask in my pocket, just in case. Whistling. Someone was whistling a song that sounded like a mockingbird's call. "You up already, stranger?" a male's voice said. I jumped and grabbed the mask, ready to tear it onto my face. But then I saw him. Tall. Dark hair. Green eyes. He looked at me with a smile. He was probably 15, 16 at most.
I blinked at him, fear driving a glare at him. "Hey. You gonna answer? It's actually rude not to answer someone's question when asked," the stranger said. I stared at him a little, moving forward.
"Yeah. I'm up. Who are you?" I said, edging closer to the door.
"Name's Kai. Kai Embers. You?"
"Umm. Y/N." I walked a little faster towards the door and reached for the handle when I felt a pain shoot up my leg and make me drop to my knees. Kai gasped a little, opened a cabinet and walked over to me. "Here." He handed me a roll of white bandages. I looked up at him and saw a friendly gleam in his eyes.
I got up and walked over to a chair that sat in the corner of the room. I pulled up my sweat pants and saw a long, red burn reach up from my calf to my knee. I was handed a bottle of solution to put on it before the bandages. It burned and I gritted my teeth against the pain, slamming my eyes shut when I wrapped the bandages on the burn.
"You got it pretty bad, Y/N," Kai said. I glanced up at him, stopping mid way wrapping my leg. I looked him up and down as he stood against the log cabin wall. "Yeah. What about you?" I asked coldly. He rolled up his sleeve and showed me a dark red and white bandage on his forearm.
"Saving you was worth the risk." He stared at me with the same coldness I shared with him. "I guess..."
"Thanks. For saving me," I said, looking away and continuing with my work. Kai stayed quiet for a moment, but I could feel his eyes burning into me. There was a strange silence between us until I was done. I got to my feet and started walking towards him. "No probs. What were you doing in that burning facility, anyways? You didn't look anything like the other girls who escaped from there." He grabbed the roll of bandages from me and walked into the kitchen area, opening a cabinet, and placed it in.
Good. He doesn't know I'm the White Ninja..., I thought. "Uh... Well... I had friends in there and I was with the other Ninjas for a bit, insisting that I could help, and I did. Until I was caught inside and... that's when you found me," I said, trying to think of a reasonable excuse for why I was in there. He turned to me rather quickly, eyes wide with excitement and surprise.
"You were with the Ninjas?! Wow! What an honor... I admire them a lot, their bravery and cunningness. Especially the White one. She's really cool! But I heard that the Red Ninja, the original one, was captured at some point. No one has seen him," he said, rolling his eyes with wonder. He stared at the ceiling, a small smile on his face before waking into reality again.
"I have a few questions for you now," I said.
"Shoot away."
"Ok, well. To start, where are we?"
"About 12 miles away from Norriseville."
"Why are you out here all by yourself?"
"Was left by my parents and other family members... And other reasons I wish to not share."
"And finally, why did you save me? If you thought you weren't brave like the Ninja, then why come in to save me?"
I saw a distant gleam in his eyes as he turned away to the left and stared out the window above the small sink that glimmered a dull silver, old of age. I breathed in, waiting patiently for the answer to come. His green eyes searched for words that only existed in his mind. He blinked slowly, sighing.
"I was walking through this forest for a reason. I felt a weird feeling that morning, like I needed to get out and save someone. There was just that feeling that led me to the smoke, to the feeling of heat, and to the flare of orange. Then the feeling i had felt was bravery. That bravery drove me into the walls of fire and drove me to help you. You needed someone. I don't know. You just seemed... special. That's probably a little deep, but it's the plain and simple truth," he said without looking at me. Now I saw it. This stranger wasn't just anyone who lived away from people, away from the drama, or just existed. He lived. He actually lived the life he chose, not what was chosen for him.
He was someone different from the mirror image of me. The mirror image of everything I had known. Then the hurt hit me like a freight train, barreling down on the shiny silver tracks as it slammed into my heart. Tears formed and perched on the edge of my eyelids. I hung my head and sat back down on my chair. Randy... Where was he? Why did he hate you? No, he hated the mask. He hated the White Ninja. I loved him. No matter if he pushed me away. "You ok?" Kai's voice snapped me out of my haze and I found the tears sliding down my face.
"Y-yeah... well, no. Not really," I said. Kai looked me deep in my eyes.
"Missing someone, is my guess. Someone you think hates you, someone who you'll love, even though you think won't forgive you," he said, leaning against the counter and crossing his arms over his chest. I stared at him.
"Yeah... How did you know?" I asked quietly. Kai stared at me with a small smile back.
"Cause I've been in your shoes before. Word of advice, don't think that you've been the only person in this or that situation. Cause, more than likely, they've been in it too," he said. There was more to this guy than what you saw on the outside.
