Y/N's POV:

It had been hours since Kai had started in on his history. "I was raised in a village not far from Norriseville with my parents, uncles, aunts, cousins, everyone. I was happy. I was five when the day came... the day the ground I had been raised on for years was stained with red. My father stayed behind to fend off my family, but he ordered my mother into the forest to keep me away from danger. Obviously, I didn't know it until later. It was cold, that night. There was... someone chasing us. I could hear heavy breathes behind us, but I didn't look back to see who.
"I remember seeing an animal in the forest, chasing mother. But she outwitted them and got a little bit of down time. Just enough to hide me... I remember seeing the hands of a stranger reaching for me and taking me away. And as I looked over the stranger's shoulder, I saw my mother taking on the beast with red eyes, and steam flaring from it's nose," Kai stopped to wipe away the tears, but it was no use. They just kept coming. His sobs were stubborn, just like his spirit. I blinked at him and placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Don't fight. It's ok. I won't judge you," I whispered. He nodded and continued: "The stranger turned out to be Aspen. He was older, but not by much. After a few years, after we grew up together, Aspen and I ruled these lands. One day, I remember walking through the forest and seeing something rustle some bushes.
"I was so into the hunt, I had already aimed my bow at the creature. As the shadow popped out of the bush, I fired my arrow, not seeing that it was a human... When I realized what I had done, I went over to ask if he was ok. And when I got closer, I knew the face. It was my father. The look of fear was frozen on his face when he died. I couldn't tell Aspen about that. He'd think that I had tried to kill him! I told Aspen that it might be better... if we split up.
"Aspen didn't agree, and it turned into a fight. I had killed someone before, and I was willing to do it again. Aspen came away with a cut up arm, and I had a scar on my right shoulder blade. Finally, he agreed and we split. For years, I had been building this place and had gotten help from people who have never come back... Most of their names I've forgotten and left behind," he concluded. I nodded slowly, trying to think of a way to comfort my friend. He buried his head in his hands quickly to hide his anger and sadness.
Could you imagine what if felt like? To not know your parents? To be left behind? I knew that I had felt this way a few days weeks ago when Randy was in the hospital. I thought he wasn't coming back. He wasn't coming home. But then, thanks to Ford, he got better. Breaking the mood, Kai sat up and sighed, standing up and wiping away tears. He turned to me, "I'm... uh... going to be downstairs, ok?" I stared at him for a little bit. A thin smile was on his face, and I had a feeling that it was going to be the last time I would ever see that smile on his face for a long, long time.
I nodded and smiled back, hoping that things would be fine. I watched him go downstairs, my mouth wanting to say more, but not finding the words to say. I swallowed back my fear and shook my head. Everything's find, Y/N, I thought. Oh, how I was so, so wrong... I laid down and thought about what had just happened, the story of Kai. His dark green eyes were so full of life, so full of hope.
Breaking my mind thoughts was a thud from downstairs and somethings crashing on the floor. My eyes widened and I sat up on my bed. A deadly silence crept into the room like a sharp, black shadow. I felt the coldness of it wrap around me and pull me to the stairs. I leaned over the wooden railing, staring at the line of blood red light that shone from the sunsetting outside the house.
I breathed in and out, trying to calm myself down as I carefully and as quietly as I could, walked down the stairs. No noise. Just the silence of the shadow. I walked down farther, making my breathing quicken along with my heartbeat. When I got to the main floor, the only thing I saw in the red light was Aspen holding Kai with a knife in his hand, against Kai's throat. He glanced up at me, anger flicking to a pure, unmistakeable, cold-blooded smile of white teeth. His blue eyes looked like ice in the fading light of the sun. "A-Aspen...? What are you-"
I was broken off by the sight of sheer horror of blood on the silver blade that slashed across Kai's throat. He dropped to the floor, eyes open and staring aimlessly with betrayal and anger, before passing over into motionless. His green eyes that once looked full of life, were now sickening to me and made me loose my balance and lean against the wall with my arm. I stared up at Aspen as he crossed the floor with no emotion reflecting in his eyes. "How could you...?" I seethed, glaring at him. He flicked the knife in the air, spraying droplets of blood on the dark wooded walls. He smiled again, even wider.
"You honestly think I cared for him?" he said forcefully. I finally put it all together. My mind was being blown with every passing second that he stared and strode forward. I swallowed down the sick feeling I held in my throat. It burned with anger and horror.
"You... You're not Aspen!" I shouted, feeling light headed as I backed towards the door. He smiled even wider and a sinister laugh singing through his teeth. I had to call the other Ninjas! I gripped the handle shakily and raced out with no intention of turning back or slowing down. It's not just us anymore...
