Chapter 12- D for Doom

I sat in front of the mirror, sipping the cup of coffee in my hand and trying to perceive the taste of every ingredient used.

I was dressed in a white, shiny tutu dress or something (I don't even know what it's called) which was laced beautifully in the end. My stockings sparkled magnificently and my feet. . .

"Hey Beth! It's been ages since you went to look for the dancing shoes", I shouted at the top of my voice. Where was this girl?

"Found 'em", I heard her voice peep behind me. She came towards me holding the pair of glittery ballet shoes in her hands.

Beth was my stylist for the day. I must say, the bimbos knew quite a lot about style and make-up. All this time while she was doing my make-up she kept blabbering about all those style related stuff and I was like- "Yeah...Hmm...Yeah...I know"

I wore the shoes and tried to stand up. Turning around, I took some steps forward and then walked back again. I frowned. Something wasn't right with the shoes.

"Um... I think I've outgrown these shoes. It's not comfortable...", I said looking at Beth, waiting for her suggestion.

"Are you kidding me? They fit perfectly", she said with surety.

"I don't know Beth..."

She looked at me like I was talking nonsense. "Are you telling me that you're now Miss Bigfoot?" saying this, she threw back her head and laughed out loud. I just made a straight face because I didn't find that funny at all.

A moment later, the door creaked open and in came Rosa (one of the bimbos). "You look hot, man" she commented when she saw me.

"All thanks to Beth", I said, motioning my hands towards her. She smiled proudly.

We gossiped for some time before Jasper came to pick me up.

He wore a white, expensive tuxedo-matching my dress- which fit him perfectly. He looked, well, lovely.

He smiled that same smile which he did in my dream when I was still in my old form. It still seemed to make my heart beat at an extreme velocity.

"You look... gorgeous", he said when he saw me coming downstairs.

"Thank you... The same goes for you", I said, way too politely.

I should've been happy right? I mean, Jasper was looking unreasonably handsome AND he called me 'gorgeous'. But instead I felt depressed.

That was because seeing him suddenly made me realize what was actually going to happen.

We were going to lose, weren't we?

I gulped down a liter of saliva just imagining about how mad he was going to be. This competition meant a lot to him. I really didn't want to hurt him.

"Who wants some cookies?", Maggie came smiling, with a plate full of cookies.

"Hi Maggie", Jasper greeted. "You look as pretty as your daughter here". Everyone laughed at this remark. Well, everyone except me.

While everyone enjoyed cookies, I was thinking of something else.

My parents.

Did they even exist now? I didn't even know. I smiled sadly, imagining what their reactions would have been if they knew I was going to dance. Really? You're gonna dance? You know, I used to be a real ballerina of my school. You may use some tips from me! Mum would've said. And Dad would've picked the most stunning dress for me. That's for my little princess, he would've said.

I missed them badly. Oh god, I needed to see them. To be with them. Right now.

"Jackie? Hey, are you... Are you okay?", Rosa's voice brought me back to the real world. Everyone had stopped talking and were staring at me.

"Yes... yes", I said, quickly blinking away my tears, hoping no one noticed. "I'm completely fine. I think we should go now"

"Yeah come on", Jasper said, getting up from his seat.

Just as we were about to go, Maggie came and said to me in a loving voice, "Best of luck. May you two win it this time too... I'll be there in the auditorium in an hour okay honey?"

I nodded slightly and we went off to our destination.

********

"Hey... Are you nervous?", Jasper asked with concern. We were standing at the backstage, waiting for the host to call out our name. Well, he was the one who was waiting. I, on the other hand, was totally freaking out.

"A-a b-b-bit", I said, shivering. And it wasn't the air conditioner either.

"Come on! We're experts. And experts always know what they're doing, right?", he said.

I nodded. I understood that it was to encourage me but at that moment, I felt like landing a hard kick on his face. Experts? My bloody foot!

"So our next participants are...", the manly voice of the host boomed from the microphone. "Jackie Johnson and Jasper Collins!" he waited till the audience's applaud ended. "May I tell you ladies and a gentleman that this couple, has won this event...Three times in a row! That's right... So here we present Jasper and Jackie!"

We walked gracefully to the centre of the stage and bowed. A second later, the music started.

"God save me", I muttered as we began to dance.

It was all going on smoothly. I had learnt all the steps by heart and seeing Jasper dance so nicely made me want to do well even more. I could see the smiling faces of the people sitting in the gallery and I knew everything was going all right. . .

Wrong.

--It happened so suddenly that I couldn't even figure out how. My shoe strap got loose, I got confused, lost balance, and I fell on the floor with a loud thud. I could feel the pain in my head as it hit the floor.

The last thing I felt before very beautifully blacking out was that someone picked me up and ran towards the backstage, yelling, "Oh no, she's bleeding..."
