Chapter 18- You Make Me happy

I gawped down at the round object in front of me. It had some depth as well. It was white but appeared multi- colored since some strange shades were painted on top of it- green, orange, yellow...; Small, peach colored tubes were scattered here and there, and it somehow made me wonder if they were pieces of human fingers without the insides... Ew! The image was gross...

"Will you just keep staring at your pasta or will actually continue the story? Coz I have a lot of other stuff to do" said a monotonous and sarcastic voice with much emphasis on the word 'lot', interrupting my investigation of the yummy pasta which the school cafeteria offered.

"Uhh... What?" I asked the person bluntly.

Natasha's face changed and I knew something was wrong. What was our conversation about? I just couldn't remember. . .

Oh yeah! We were talking about yesterday's incident.

"Yeah so where was I?" I asked her, displaying my short term memory's talents.

"Jasper said 'I love you'...?" she said trying real hard to restrain her readily-available sarcasm.

I let out a breath and continued. "Yes, so he said the three words okay? And you what the oddest thing was? I couldn't say it back! Like... the words weren't getting out of my throat!"

I banged my hands on the table to express my confusion. I looked up at Natasha to find that she was biting at her nails, much focused, which probably meant that she was thinking about my situation.

Or maybe, was just ignoring me.

After the incident the previous day, I'd decided that Natasha's (crazy) counselling was what I needed at that moment. She hadn't complained much when I approached her because truth to be told, she didn't hate me. I mean she may have hated Jackie but I was not really Jackie from the inside, right?

Maybe that's why I just couldn't feel free with Beth and all of Jackie's friends. They didn't mind though, when I refused to have lunch with them because, as long as they had one another to gossip among, they didn't really care.

Such phonies. I pity them.

"So that means you don't love him" Natasha's still monotonous voice brought me back to earth.

I analyzed what she just said and retorted, "How can that be possible? I like him! He is the one I have a crush on since eight grade; he is the one whom I dream about every day!"

She raised both her eyebrows at my statements. She probably didn't expect that from 'The Dazzling Jackie' she thought me to be. Anyhow, she continued, "Maybe you liked him before. Maybe you had a crush on him but it is gone now? I mean, come on! Feelings can change, right?"

"I- I guess" I said as I pondered over what she'd said for a moment. Right then, the school bell rang, indicating the end of lunch break. We both got out of the cafeteria and to our lockers to take our books.

"Don't worry too much pumpkin!" she said as she headed to her class, which was probably Chemistry.

I smiled in reply and ambled towards my own class which was Economics, still recalling our conversation.

And also about why she called me 'pumpkin'

"... Feelings can change, right?"

Natasha's words were still hanging on in my mind. Maybe that really was the thing. I didn't really like Jasper now. After he ditched me like that, chose Jackie over me, how could I even think about getting him, about liking him? He was a crush and just like the word itself, he had crushed my feelings towards him long ago.
