Chapter 16- Chits, Espressos and Laughs

A chit. That's what it was.

But who could send me a chit? I never really liked this chit-passing thing during the class. It's too distracting. And I was also once punished for chit-talking with Natasha in eighth grade. Even after my protesting Natasha sent me a chit and I had to reply because I couldn't just ignore her. We were talking about some slumber party planning when the teacher caught me passing the chit to her and threw me out of the class. I still remember Natasha's outrageously laughing face as I quietly went out of the class.

Still and all, I decided to open the chit.

'Do you have any plans today?', it read. I immediately knew who it was, without even looking at the person's sign at the bottom of the crumpled paper. I recognized Travis's neat handwriting too well.

'Why do you ask? o.O', I scribbled and passed it back to his seat.

His chit came a minute later.

'A cousin of mine wants me to come to her newly-opened coffee shop down the street today. But she insists that I must bring any friend. So I thought we could go together... '

Now this was a little absurd. Why was he asking me - out of all the people he was friends with?

'Well, why only me?'

'I actually asked Sharon and Mike but Sharon has flute classes to attend and Mike has to take his girlfriend out. So there.'

Hmm. I can probably go right? I mean, it wasn't as if I was really busy or something. Nor I was talking with Jasper now. I let out a breath and started writing to him.

'Yeah, okay. No problem:) You can pick me up at around six'

He took some time and passed another chit to me.

'Great! :D And just to make sure you don't take this the wrong way, I'm not taking you on a date okay? Although I'd love to;)'

He was officially flirting now! I didn't know he could even flirt with anyone. He had flirted with the 'original' me only once, if making the sketch of a girl without even her asking even counts as flirting.

So I thought of a witty reply and wrote, 'You wouldn't dare to take Jasper Collin's girlfriend out would you? xP'

Just as I was about to pass the chit, Miss Ella came near me and said in an angry tone, "What on earth are you doing Jackie?! Just look at your notebook!"

And I did look. I looked at the board and then at my book. The contrast that I found was obvious. The board was filled while my notebook just displayed utter emptiness.

"Uhh. . . I-I-I'd lost my pen, Miss Ella. I'll start right away", I replied, adding an enthusiastic smile in the end.

"You better", she warned and went away to check on the others. Quickly, I turned around and showed a 'thumbs up' at him. He smiled in reply.

My perfectly witty reply just got wasted. I sighed in disappointment and began writing down the questions on the board.

"Tink-Tonk-Tinker-Tinker"

The cute, little jingle bells dangling on the door of the coffee shop chimed as Travis and I entered into it. We were greeted by the delicious smell of coffee being made which made my stomach groan in hunger. I took a deep breath as I absorbed the aroma into me. It felt amazing.

A girl of about my age brushed passed, looking up and down at me as if I was the first female human being she'd ever seen. That kind of made me conscious about my looks and I turned a little towards the right to see my reflection on the glass windows.
