Ch. 8

Why am I even here?, Hiyori asked herself as she stood behind the school gym's opened door.

Oh right...Kentaro-kun asked me to be the boys basketball team manager. Great!, she thought sarcastically.

Hiyo can hear the screeches of the rubber shoes against the gym's floor and the shouts of the guys and girls inside the school gym.

She remembered now how she came into this mess.

Early morning...

A shadow fell over Hiyo's desk by the time the second bell rang for lunch break. She looked up, to her surprise she saw Kenichi's friend, Kentaro Jin.

"What do you want?" She asked with a poker face then she quickly grabbed her bag--acting as if she's tidying up her things.

"Woah. Chill, Kyoko-chan. I just wanna ask you if you could be the boys basketball team manager?" Jin went straight to the point.

"No." Hiyo replied easily without looking at him.

"Come on! You know that we don't have a manager." He said with a pout.

"No. As in N.O. No..." she replied in a monotone.

"Come on! I know you don't have any club activity. This is an opportunity for you!"

Hiyo turned and glared at him as she stood up from her seat, zipping-close her school bag and was about to walk away when...

Jin laughed instead of being scared at her. "You're really funny, Kyoko-chan.."

"I'm not making jokes, Kentaro-kun." She narrowed her eyes at him and gave him a glare.

"Please, Kyoko-chan! We are really in need of manager...I beg you! If I need to kneel, I'll do so..." He said and as if on cue, he kneeled down in front of her before she could stop him.

"Kentaro-kun!" Hiyo hissed at him.

"You're embarassing me!" She said as she looked around--noticing that almost everyone is watching them.

"I'll only stop if you'll agree in joining us," Jin said staring at her intensely.

Hiyo looked away, sighing in defeat as she saw his desperate look on his face.

"Alright! I'll join your team. But in one condition!" She said as she stared hard at Jin, who was now standing up and dusting off his pants.

"What is it?" He asked.

"Promise me that you'll not let Fujiro-kun join the boys basketball team!" She said in a small voice, looking away from him.

Jin's eyes widened. "I can't..."

"Take it or leave it!" Hiyori then glared at him.

"Alright. I won't," he said sighing but what Hiyori didn't know is that Jin crossed his fingers behind his back.

Sorry, Kyoko-chan. But, we really need him in the team..., he thought to himself.

"Hey, manager. What are you doing outside?"

Hiyori snapped back to reality when she heard Jin's voice behind her.

Hiyo turned and her heart skipped a beat as her eyes met a pair of dark ones. She knew it! She felt something might came up and she was right.

She quickly looked away from Kenichi and gave Jin a death glare.

"Sorry, manager. We REALLY need Fujiro on the team. He's our new member. Starting from today. May I also add that he was just recently healed from...Oof..." He stopped as Kenichi's fist met his side.

"Healed from what?" Hiyo asked Jin with a frown, ignoring Kenichi who was giving Jin a peace of his mind. What is he talking about?, she thought curiously.

"It was nothing..." Kenichi replied for Jin while his friend was wringing in pain.

"That hurts, man!" Jin shouted at Kenichi as he watched his friend walked towards the gym without looking at Hiyo."You'll pay for this, Fujiro!!"

Hiyo couldn't believe what she just heard. She was really curious about what Jin was about to say. As she watched Kenichi go, she turned to Kentaro and frowned at him. But he just gave her an apologetic smile.

"Okay, guys!" Jin's voice echoed around the gym which made the guys stopped practicing and turned his direction.

"Listen up everyone!" He shouted to the team. "Kenichi Fujiro here is the newest member of our basketball team," he added as he tapped Kenichi's shoulder next to him. "He will be your new captain." He went straight to the point.

"What?!" The guys burst out. Whispers now surround the gym. Even Hiyo can't believe herself. She knew that Kentaro is the boys basketball team's captain for almost 2 years already and then suddenly he's going to appoint Kenichi his position!

"You've gotta be kidding me, captain!" protested one of the boys, Matsuyama Kenji, who is the hot-headed forward on the team. Kenji has the intimidating look you can ever imagine.

I can see he doesn't want Kenichi to be in the team, Hiyori thought as she watched the guy with the short red hair.

"Before you guys question why...The reason is...This guy has good leadership and is good at playing basketball, I can assure you guys that he'll be a better captain than me. He's a good friend of mine since elementary. Be good to him." Jin explained enthusiastically.

Hiyo watched everyone in the crowd. Some of them look unconvinced and look annoyed at the same time.
