I smiled at her as she walked away, rolling her eyes and laughing quietly. She was so. . . badass. It was kind of cute in a way.
My smile faded away as I went to follow her directions to the toilet. I started to think about the thought of Joe and Mason. They honestly looked so alike that I when I first saw Mason, I thought Joe was completely lying to me about his whole life, lying to me about not having a fucking child.
I did my business and washed my hands as I walked back to the living room. They were still watching Friends, which was actually quite a funny show. Mason was sitting next to Liana on the couch, leaning into her as her arm was around his shoulder. I decided to sit down next to them, mainly because he pointed at the seat next to him. I'm pretty sure he just wanted to touch my hair. Which he did. Again.
"Dinner's ready!" I hear from the kitchen, I mean, it did smell pretty fantastic. It smelt like chicken and mashed potatoes. I could feel myself salivating, and Oli had to warn me about my saliva dripping onto the kitchen floor. He was quietly laughing, and I smacked him upside his head, basically my way of telling him to shut it.
All of us sat down at the dining room table. My instincts were right; there was chicken and mashed potatoes, and better yet, macaroni and cheese.
"Wow, mom, you really went all at it." Liana said, grabbing two plates, one for her and one for Mason.
I honestly can't believe we all can sit at the table. It fits all nine of us.
"I see that." I said as I grabbed two huge spoonfuls of mashed potatoes from the table.
"Hungry much?" Wallis asked as she passed by me with a full plate in her hands.
"Look who's talking, Wallis." I said quietly to her. Her plate had just as much food as mine. I didn't want to talk like a shithead in front of Mrs. Gillian.
I saw Joe try to sneak food off of me, but I quickly slapped his arm away. "Caspar doesn't share food!" I yelled, quoting Joey from Friends. Joe started to laugh. This was the first I've heard him in a little while. Oh, if only he knew the little mate was his kid.
I heard Liana crack a laugh and she covered her mouth while Mason looked up at her confused. "I don't get it." He shrugged. "Oh, mom! Get me five pieces of chicken."
"What?" Liana exclaimed. "You can't even eat three!"
"I promise I can finish it! I'm just so hungry." He whined.
"Okay, okay, five pieces it is." She said, cutting five pieces from the huge-ass chicken. "If you don't finish, I swear." I stifled a laugh and I look over at Joe, and cracked a smile.
"I think it's great you're letting the little guy eats his protein." Alfie said. Mason looked up at him, and I swore he had a small hint of intimidation in his eyes. I bursted out laughing.
"He just looked up at Alfie with the most scared look in his eyes." I said, covering my mouth. Joe laughed fully this time.
"I was going to say the same thing!" He said. "He seemed bloody terrified." He laughed again.
I looked at Amara, who was staring at Liana. I looked at Liana, who was looking at Joe, who was dying down his laughter. I'm guessing there was a lot of staring involved in the Gillian family. Then I looked at Zoe, he was looking between Joe and Liana. Okay, something is going on, and Caspar Lee is going to find out about it. No matter what it takes.
"Why is everybody staring at each other?" Wallis demanded, dropping her fork on the plate. Everyone shifted their heads to her, finally snapping back into reality. "I mean, to be honest, it was creepy." She said sitting back into her seat, crossing her arms.
"So, Mason, who is your father?" Alfie asked him, ignoring Wallis' comment. Zoe elbow his ribs pretty harshly, and he whined. "Holy crap, Zoe."
"You don't ask those things, Alfie." She said quietly.
"No, no, it's fine." She said, leaning her head forwards to the table and tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. She smiled nervously. Well, I wouldn't even consider it as a smile. It looked forced and uncomfortable.
I looked over at Amara, who was giving her a death stare. I moved my eyes over at Joe, who dropped his spoon and looked at Liana. Well, I'm pretty sure that something happened between them before he left to go to Britain, because a) they have a kid but Joe doesn't know that he has one, and b) I can see the way Joe looks at Liana. I'm pretty sure he fancies her, still, I guess.
"Uh, the father-"
"Mom told me that he left her before I was born. He's a jerk!" Mason interrupted. Everyone turned their heads to him. He looked genuinely upset.
"When's your birthday?" Alfie asked slowly.
Mason gulped, looking intimidated again. "August 5, 2009."
"How do you feel about your dad?" Oli asked. God damn it, Oli! Shut up! I knew I wasn't the only one mentally telling him that.
"I hate my dad, I'll tell you that." Mason replied, eating his chicken. That just stung me in the heart. Poor Joe.
"Come on," I tried to cheer him up. I did this for both Joe and Mason. "I'm sure you don't completely hate him."
"Nope. I hate him." Well that didn't work.
"Mason, you don't say that you hate something. I don't want to hear you say that." Liana stated, a little uneasy.
"Mom, I'm not four anymore. I'm seven. Plus, I've heard you say worse before. But besides that, all of my friends have a dad, but not me. I know it's not your fault, but I can't help but feel that dad hated me, even before I was born." I heard the crack in his voice, and I knew he was going to cry.
"Mason, stop." Liana said quietly, tears falling down her cheeks.
My arm started to get goosebumps. All eyes were on him. You know, for a 7 year old, he sure knows how to express his feelings emotionally.
Mason continued, "I never even did anything wrong. I don't even know him, yet I don't know why he would just leave." The tear started to fall out his eye, and I looked at Liana, who was already crying.
"Mason, it wasn't your dad's fault." She said, struggling to say her words. "He just-"
He ran out of the dinner table, and ran somewhere upstairs to the house. Liana sort of groaned and wiped her eyes, and followed him up the stairs. I looked at Amara, who was silently crying. I felt something in my heart start to. . . hurt, I guess. All eyes were on her and Mrs. Gillian.
"It's a long-ass story." Amara said, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath.
