Who knew that one week could hold a year of pain?
The four friends were all under a spell of depression. It had been a week since they were informed that their raven haired friend was in a coma. It had been a week of tension. None of them contacted each other. It would only lead to more conflict or a mental breakdown.
It had been the hardest week since the beginning of the school year. Everyone had noticed. Teachers, students, the principal. Though they were each called up to the office, they were never given a punishment. The principal decided that knowing that their friend was in the hospital was punishment enough.
To worsen their mood, it had been raining the entire week. Go figure. Gemma wasn't angry anymore. When Evan had called her, many sudden sobs and colorful words were directed towards him. He got to explain the entire situation to her at the hospital.
Of course she was hurt, but they were teenagers. She wasn't one to hold a grudge. She was an adult and the only thing that mattered at the moment was her niece's health.
"Evan Fong?"
The brown eyed boy hadn't even realized that he was staring at the raindrops, flowing down window. He raised his head and looked up at his teacher's pitiful face.
Apparently all of his teachers attended the talent show. They witnessed the broken look in his eyes when he realized the pain he caused. They didn't feel the need to add more stress.
"There's a man outside saying he wanted to speak to you." He wasn't exactly quiet about it and many of the other students stared at him. Not like he cared though. He stepped outside to see Drew, Gemma's boyfriend.
"Hey, kid. I know you're going through some stuff..."
Evan shook his head. He didn't want to talk about this stuff. He couldn't. Not to his friends, not to his mom. There was no way he'd risk saying anything in fear he'd break.
"You don't know," he snapped. Apologizing right after. "I hurt Evanee and she could've died. Hell, she's in a coma and she might never wake up. If you're here to beat me up, go ahead. I deserve it."
He felt two arms wrap around him. Drew was his old babysitter. He remembered only one time where he had hugged him. It was when his father had left him and his mother. Drew was still there, babysitting when there was shouting downstairs. As a thirteen year old, Evan felt nothing but anger. That anger turned to sadness and he cried. He cried for so long and was surprised when he felt Drew hug him.
His father rarely showed true compassion. He was more passionate in his work than he was in his own family. It disgusted Evan.
Finally, after a week, Evan felt everything crumble. Tears slid down his cheeks as he hugged Drew back.
"I love her. Shes helped me a lot and I hurt her. I'm a fucking monster," Evan cried.
"Don't blame yourself, Evan. Gemma talked to your mom. She said I could take you home," Drew said.
Evan nodded. He didn't want to go back into class with puffy eyes. His mother had been at work in another part of the country. She hadn't been there for a week and he never called her. Evan always shared things with his mom, but he couldn't this time. The guilt that flooded him always shut him up. He couldn't do anything, but a soft voice echoed throughout his head.
It's not your fault, idiot.
----------------------
David hadn't bothered to even go to school that day. School didn't interest him anymore. Not after what he did. He hated himself. He loathed the figure staring back at him every time he passed the mirror.
He regret kissing Evanee. Although he liked her, doing that was wrong. He knew it was wrong but he couldn't stop himself. Seeing her so happy. It was his fault.
If he hadn't done that, none of this would have happened. Even after what he had done, she still defended him and took a punch for him. A punch that sent her to the hospital.
Nothing helped. David couldn't get his mind off of her. The only thing he had been doing was crying. Though not even that calmed him. Evan, Jonathan, and Tyler refused to talk to him. Maybe this was the end of their friendship. A friendship that cherished. They've all been together for so long. If only there was a way to turn back time.
---------------
For once, Jonathan completed his homework early. There wasn't much for him to do since he hadn't spoken to any of his friends and he couldn't go to the skate park since it was raining.
Even after a week, he was still angry. He was angry at David for kissing Evanee. That was the most idiotic decision he had ever made. Then he was mad at Evan for hurting the green eyed girl. He wasn't exactly mad at Tyler but he knew that they'd argue if they started talking about everything and that was the only thing on his mind. He was mostly mad at himself though.
The blue eyed boy was mad at the fact that he, like the rest of the audience, sat dumbfounded when they saw Evan beating David up. He stood motionless when he saw Evanee desperately trying to prey Evan off of David. He didn't help her. Why didn't he help her?
That question bothered him. It would pop up profusely and annoy him throughout the day. He wished he helped her. It had been a week since he accepted his feelings towards her, but he wouldn't do anything about them. No. He'd stay quiet for everyone's sake.
It wasn't only Evanee's condition that bothered him also. He was now grieving over his sister as well. When he held Evanee in his arms on that stage, she had the same blank expression as little Macy. Little Macy who died in her older brother's arms. Little Macy who always wore a smile on her face and didn't let cancer get in the way of spending her last few days at home running around like a normal child. Little Macy who held no emotion when she stared up at Jonathan with her last dying breaths.
Jonathan could barely get by the first time he experienced that. For it to happen again with Evanee clawed at him inside. At least this time, they had a chance. There was a chance that Evanee would survive. That's all he needed. A chance.
Macy didn't have that chance. This time Jonathan would protect Evanee, in his sister's honor.
--------------------
Maybe the least affected was Tyler. He was also angry for the same reasons as Jonathan, but not as much. He and Evanee were good friends, but they weren't exactly that close. Though, he helped her find Kelly. Beautiful Kelly who loved him. She was special and Evanee was the one who helped him find her. He would never forget that.
Like all his other friends, he also wasn't in the best mood. School was over and Kelly was at his house, spending a day in.
"She'll be okay. I know it. Evanee's a strong girl. She's the strongest girl I know and she'll get through this," Kelly told Tyler, hugging him from behind.
Tyler smiled softly at her. "I know she's strong. It's the guys I'm worried about. I just hope she wakes up before one of them breaks."
He was right to be worried. The possibilities were endless. Who knew what any of them could do before she woke up? If she woke up.
