"We did it...we made it...we're safe..."
Nora sighs in total relief, happy to be alive. Nate breathes in and out, scarred to see what just happened. The nuclear explosion could have killed him, Nora, Shaun, and the others who survived. He now knows they'll be okay.
The platform reaches the bottom of the Vault. In front of the survivors was a metal fence, and behind it were two men wearing blue jumpsuits. One of them had a security vest and helmet on him and the other was the leader of the Vault, other known as the Overseer.
"Everyone please step off the elevator and proceed up the stairs in an orderly fashion," said the security guard.
"No need to worry, folks!" said the Overseer. "We'll get everyone situated in your new home, Vault 111! A better future. Underground!"
The gate opens, letting everyone out. The survivors were still shaken from witnessing the nuclear explosion that they won't stop talking about it. Nate and Nora proceed up the stairs across the metal bridge. The shelter didn't look that bad. Most of everything is metallic; no grass nor trees. Just metal. A Vault Staff member on the computer checks on everyone who enters the Vault, including Nate and Nora.
"Vault-Tec is here for you," said the Vault Computer. "All residents please proceed in an orderly fashion. Welcome Home!"
The couple and their baby walk over to one of the staff members handing out jumpsuits for those who first entered. Nate walks over and takes his from the woman.
"Thanks," he said. "What now?"
"Just follow the doctor, here," said the female staff member. "He'll show you where to go."
"All right, you three," said the doctor, "follow me." Nate and Nora follow the doctor.
"Oh you're going to love it here," he smiled. "This is one of our most advanced facilities. Not that the others aren't great, mind you..."
The three walk past Nate and Nora's neighbors. They were truly terrified from the nuclear attack.
"It's gone...our home...everything we had," said the husband.
"My mother and father are down in D.C....oh God, honey, what if they didn't make it?"
"I know this is a difficult time," said a staff member, "but Vault-Tec will be with you every step of the way. You'll thrive here."
Nora walks up closely to the doctor. "How long do you think we'll be down here?" she asked.
"Oh, we'll be going over all that in orientation," said the doctor. "Just a few medical items we have to get through first."
Nate and Nora enter a large room filled with pods lined up next to each other, big enough for one person to fit in. Most of the survivors put on their Vault Jumpsuits and some get inside the pods. The doctor looks at Nate.
"Just step in here and put your Vault suit on," he said. Shaun cries. Nora looks down at her baby and she comforts him.
"It'll be okay," she said. "Daddy's right here, see?" Nate walks up to her and plays with Shaun for a little bit. The infant giggles.
"Who's my little guy?" Nate asked. "I'm not going far. I'll just be over there."
"Well, this is it honey," said Nora. "I love you."
"I love you too," he said.
"All set?" asked the doctor. Nate looks over at the doctor and nods. He looks back at Nora and kisses her and pulls back. He takes his jumpsuit and puts it on. He steps inside the pod and sits down.
"The pod will decontaminate and depressurize you before we head deeper into the Vault," said the doctor. "Just relax."
Nora steps inside the pod with her jumpsuit on and with Shaun. Nate takes a deep breath. "Time for a whole new life," he sighed. The pods close on everyone.
"Resident secure," said the Vault Computer. "Occupant vitals; normal. Procedure complete."
Nate starts to feel cold. As he felt it, he notices cold fumes spreading across inside of his pod. Was this good or bad?
"In 5...4...3...2...1......"
---------------------------------------------
"Manual overdrive initiated. Cryogenic stasis suspended."
Nate quickly wakes up. He breathes slowly and notices he's still inside the pod. He looks around, then looks to see his wife Nora still inside as well with Shaun. He sighed in relief. Is it over? Could he get out?
Just then, a mysterious stranger from outside the pods walks over to the pod Nora is in. Nate couldn't make out who this person was. He, or she, was wearing a full, white suit, covering his, or her, entire body from head to toe.
"This is the one," said the mysterious stranger. "Right?" Another figure walks over to the chamber. This time, the man didn't wear any suit.
"Open it," he said. The fully suited stranger activates Nora's pod to open. Nate sees this happen. What's going on? Who are these two? What are they doing? As Nora's pod fully opens, she awakens and starts coughing. Shaun cries loudly.
"I-Is it over?" she asked. "Are we okay?"
"Almost," said the man. "Everything's going to be fine." The fully suited stranger reaches for Shaun.
"Come here...come here, baby," he, or she, said.
"No, wait! No, I've got him!"
"Let the boy go," said the man, pointing what looks like a revolver at her. "I'm only going to tell you once!"
"I'M NOT GIVING YOU SHAU-"
-BANG-
The suited stranger takes a crying Shaun as Nora lets go and lies back down, lifeless. Nate's eyes widen. He starts banging his fists against the glass.
"NORA!!!!" he screamed. "SHAUN!!!!!" The two strangers notice him.
"Goddamnit!" said the man. "Get the kid out of here, and let's go..."
The man walks over to Nate's chamber. Nate can now see who this man was; bald, beard, and a scar on his left eye. The man grinned a little.
"At least we still have the backup," he said. Nate angrily bangs his fists against the glass. The man stares at him, then leaves. He activates his pod to be reinitialized. As the computer reactivates, Nate starts calming down. He could feel the cold again. He slowly closes his eyes and takes a deep breath.
