As Deanna lead me into her office, my heart pounded of what was to come. We reached another repetitive house and we walked inside.
The house was the same as the rest. Couches, tables, furniture. Except Deanna had an office. A large room full of papers and books. I looked around the office, looking at pictures on the wall. Most were certificates addressed to 'Deanna Monroe.' Or 'Reg Monroe.'
"Sit. Make yourself comfortable." Deanna encouraged. I sat down on the soft piece of furniture, taking in all of the brightness of her office. "So Mary. Do you mind if I film this?" She asked, bringing out a camcorder and a tripod. I nodded while fidgeting around. "How old are you?"
"I'm fifteen. I think so anyway. I don't know the date."
"It's 19th of September. Does that change anything?" I shook my head. "What's it like out there?"
"Horrible. I haven't seen anything as clean as this place in a long time..."
"You know Mason, Ollie and Alex, yes?"
"Yeah. Mason's my brother, Alex was my best friend before all of this."
"What do you think of this place? Alexandria?"
"I don't know. It's beautiful. But, these things don't last. It won't last. It's good to belive in miracles, it's just... I haven't seen any in a long time." I say honestly.
"That's where you're wrong. Miracles happen. They did. For you and this place. You are a miracle so don't say bullshit that's not true. Everyone in here is a miracle, because they're alive." And she was right; Miracles happen. But they also end.
I looked down in shame and embarrassment.
"Well, is there anything I could do to earn my keep?" I asked.
Deanna paused for a while until she spoke. "People have told me you were good at medical services. My doctors office could use another nurse. Would you like to participate?"
"I guess. I could read up on it, like study it. Until then, I'll get back to you."
She smiled and ran across the room, searching for something. She came across some books, she handed me them and told me to read them. I nodded before walking out.
"Thank you." I said turning round to face her. I then turned around and made my way to Ron's house.
As I trekked along the clear pathway, I saw Carl.
"Carl, hey!" I shouted, running over to him. He grinned. "Where are you going?"
"I'm going to this guy's place. Ron?"
"I am too. Wanna walk together?" I smirked. He nodded and it took no time before we were in a fit of laugher.
"So yeah. Basically my Dad had to pick me up from school, when I was covered in paint and vomit." Carl laughed. I couldn't stop laughing at his hilarious story. Which, of course, lead me to fall over. Clumsy self. God dammit Mary! In front of Carl, really?
I dropped all of my books onto the ground and grazed my knee. Nothing serious.
"Oh god Mary are you okay?" Carl said, rushing down to my level. I nodded and he helped me pick up my books.
If we were in a movie right now, we would stare into each other eyes and kiss. Kiss. Oh if only.
But we're not in a movie, this is life. Nothing happens like that anymore.
We picked my books up in silence, laughing at each other's own stupidity.
"Hey guys! What are you doing?" Ron asked us weirdly. Me and Carl both stood up, looking at Ron like there was nothing wrong. "Anyways... come on inside."
We all strolled along the corridor, Ron was telling us about the school. I couldn't believe they had a school here, even though it was in a garage.
We all came to a halt when the door flew open. A tall boy, with dark hair, stood there. He looked like a nerdy type of guy with his oversized jumper and shirt and jeans. Kira, Ollie, Alex and this other girl was there too.
"Guys, this is Carl and Mary. This is Mikey, Alex, Kira, and Katy." Ron introduced. I waved politely at them and Katy and Mikey smiled back.
"You guys wanna play video games? Mikey's dad's got a pool table, but he's kinda strict about it." Ron asked us.
"It's okay, he's at work." Mikey told everyone. Me and Carl stared at each other in disbelief.
"I guess we come on kinda strong. We can just listen to music if you like?" Katy worried.
Pull it together Mary. Say something. But nothing came out of my mouth. My throat went dry and I started to sweat. What is happening?
Alex noticed and dragged me to the bed. He sat me down and whispered if I was okay. "Yeah, let's just play some video games. I'll kick your ass." I challenged Alex. Everyone chuckled and Alex slipped in the video game 'mortal combat.' Oh hell yeah.
After playing ten games of mortal combat and Mario Kart, we all sat and listened to music and talked.
"Hi Katy. What book are you reading?" I wondered.
"Oh just Harry Potter. Have you read them?"
"No. But I know the story and stuff. It's awesome." I told her honestly. I don't want to seem smart, because I only have an education of a 10 year old. I haven't been in school in 5 years.
"Well you should read them, the library here has loads of books and stuff like these. I'll take you sometime." She grinned while putting down her book.
"Hey girlies." Alex greeted us, sitting down on the bed with us. "Wanna play truth or dare with us?"
"Sure!" I agreed, standing up and sitting on the floor with Carl and Katy. Carl was on my left and Katy on my right. Kira left ages ago because she had to do something. Probably putting on even more makeup.
"Okay. Let's get started." Mikey puffed, "Mary. Truth or dare?"
