What if...?

As if on purpose, Carol decided to return to the house she had been sharing with Lindsey for a while. She was deeply hurt by the things Stevie said, but if Lindsey was truly sorry and he wanted to make things work with her again, she would try and do her best in forgiving him. Although, she had a whole set of rules in mind.

Making her way upstairs, Carol tried to be quiet, as it was still quite early in the morning. She tiptoed to the bedroom and pushed the door open... She did find Lindsey still sound asleep, but he had a companion lying next to his body as well.

"Lindsey!"

He didn't even flinch, until Carol went to his side of the bed and shook him. "Go back to sleep, Steph. It's still early." He mumbled sleepily.

"Oh, I'll give you Steph!" That caused both Lindsey and Stevie to wake up; for him it was a hard punch to his arm and for her - his body jerking. "You didn't hear from me for a couple of days and you're back with her?!"

"Don't shout, Jesus Christ!" Lindsey asked, grabbing for his jeans, that were shed on the floor the night before.

"I was going to forgive you!" Carol kept talking, but Lindsey just pushed her outside of the bedroom, giving Stevie an apologetic look. "Are you just going to let her stay in our bed?!"

"Shut the fuck up, Carol, please. First of all, I don't need you to forgive me. Second of all, that's not our bed, I only let you be a guest. Now... I wish you hadn't come like this. I don't was to separate and hate each other after we do."

"Separate? What- what are you talking about?" All of a sudden, she calmed down.

"I'm breaking up with you. We're not meant for each other, Carol. Stevie and I, on the other hand, are. She came to me yesterday and we talked it all out, we decided to stop pretending and try again."

"You're stupid for believing there still is something between you two. She doesn't love you like I do, Lindsey." She reached up to place her hands on his face, but he stopped her, shaking his head.

"We both know that's a lie. And I am sorry for stringing you along, I knew from the start nothing good was going to come out of this relationship. How could it? When every day I hoped to be woken up from a nightmare and find Stevie next to me and not you. It... it's not healthy. It's not good for either of us."

She looked away, staying quiet for a minute, before looking up at him again. "What... what if told you that... that I'm pregnant?"

Lindsey's heart stopped beating.

Stevie, who heard every word, was a split second away from getting out of bed, dressing up and running out of the house.

But...

Even if he hated to admit it, Lindsey got to know and understand Carol rather well over the period of time they had spent together, so he said in a firm, but calm voice. "But you're not."

She then sighed and shook her head.

"You shouldn't try and tie me to you, Carol. You have to realize we're over."

"If things don't go the way you planned with her, do not come running back to me."

"I don't think that's going to happen, no."

It finally sank in and she said. "When can I come and get my things?"

"Tomorrow?" Lindsey suggested, thinking now wasn't the best of times, with Stevie around.

"Okay." Carol nodded and turned the other way, heading out of the house, stopping to drop her keys on the way.

Taking a moment, Lindsey then returned to the bedroom, it being clear to him that Stevie heard everything and it somewhat relieved him. He didn't want to go through that all over again, just moments later.

"I thought it all failed, before it even started." Stevie said, welcoming Lindsey into her arms, as he climbed on the bed and lay his head on her stomach, circling his arms around her waist. "I thought you got her pregnant."

"It was only a pathetic attempt at trying to keep me from leaving."

"I figured."

"It's over now." Lindsey exhaled heavily, tilting his chin up to be able to look her in the eyes. "I'm glad you're here."

"I'm glad to be here." Stevie smiled.

"What are we going to do about the band?"

"Well... They're going to find out sooner or later." She shrugged. "They'll know something has changed between us."

"So, you're saying we should tell them the truth?"

"And also say that they can keep their opinions to themselves."

"Right." Lindsey laughed, nodding his head. "I guarantee it to you, Mick would be the first to say something."

"Definitely. He's all about drama."

"And I hope there's none of it left." He moved up higher, giving her several small kisses on the lips. "Care to join me in the shower?"

Later the same day, Lindsey let Mick know he was going to show up at the studio and that the drummer should inform the rest of the band to come too. He also mentioned that Stevie would be coming with him, which left Mick confused, to say the least.

"Ready?" Lindsey brought his and Stevie's clasped hands up to his lips, kissing the top of hers, as she nodded and they entered the room with Mick, John and Christine, instantly receiving weird looks. "First things first, I guess." Lindsey started. "During the past few days a lot has happened. Um... I have finally broken up with Carol and Stevie has agreed to give me a second chance. We know what you all must think, but quite frankly neither of us care. We think this is the right way for us and we're willing to make it, to make us work."

No one was expecting anything of this kind, coming in to work on the album today. The rest of Fleetwood Mac were going to listen and not interfere, after all, it really wasn't their place.

Lindsey honestly hardly cared about their opinions, while Stevie looked at each Brit in turns, seeing all of them have that subtle smile on their face.

After a moment, Mick spoke up. "Well then, why don't we get working?"

It had been a long time, since they had such a pleasant day, the five of them together.
