Chapter Four

As the days lead up to my last days as a 17 year old everyone around me seemed to be drunk on happiness and blinded by anticipation.

Well, everyone except for me that is.

What's worse, Jace was still pissed about the break I had suggested.

"Hey Hun." Stephanie sounded as she sat next to me at our usual table for lunch. She caught me looking over at Jace on the other side of the Cafeteria and sighed, "Look I know he's upset and this is tough for you but honestly I think it's for the best...and who knows, maybe after it's all said and done this break will only strengthen you two."

I shook my head and looked at her now. "That's just the thing Steph...I don't even know what in the hell is going on with Jace and I right now."

"What do you mean?"

I shrugged, "Well I told him about the putting a hold on our relationship but he just walked away...so are we together, are we on a break, are we broken up?" I asked, "Of course I just end up feeling like I'm thinking about this too damn much."

"I wish I had an answer for you Cassie, I really do."

__________

"One."

Stephanie looked over at me from the drivers seat, "you say something Cassie?"

"One...that's how many hours It's been since Jace left for his grandparents house, and how many days I have left as his girlfriend...or whatever we are."

"Yeah because you could potentially shift and find out that he's your mate which would make you so much more than his girlfriend." She smiled in an overly optimistic manner.

"Or more likely, I'll shift and be put under some effed up Fates voodoo and become completely obsessed with some random dude while my mind is slowly erased of all things Jace."

"Iiiiii'm almost one-hundred percent sure that isn't how it works." She said a little more high pitched than normal in an attempt to make me laugh.

I gave her a look, "I'm sure that's basically how it's done." I played along.

She shook her head dramatically, "no, nope...not how it's done."

I smiled, it was more out of sympathy of my friend trying to desperately cheer me up.

After our silly car ride from school I constantly checked my phone in hopes Jace would text me and let me know he made it to his grandparents place safe.

But nothing.

Once at home I found my father in the kitchen, I only had enough time to tell him "hi" and "bye" as he was rushing out of the garage door shouting about a "big story."

It wasn't something new to me, having my journalist father always running in and out of the house unannounced all while my mother was constantly being called into the hospital as she is one of the lead nurses in the emergency room. You sort of just get used to be by yourself.

My phone pinged twice almost back to back to notify me of new messages.

[Jace: My brother, the coward that he is picked his Beta and decided to wait until I was out of fucking town to tell me, this is such bullshit!]

[Jace: Made it, still in a mood...turning my phone off...I'll call you tomorrow.]

My heart was pounding, leave it to Ryan to make matters worse.

I swear, if I didn't know any better I would bet anything that Ryan had something to do with all of this because to be honest, Ryan's never really liked me.

And it wasn't always like that either.

I remember him being really friendly and at one point a group of us would even hang out all the time, despite Jace, Steph and I being a few years younger than he and Dean.

I even remember one time he and his friend even helped me up after I had fallen while learning to skate at the local skating rink a few months back.

But when Jace and I got together, it was as if his whole demeanor changed towards me. He stopped acknowledging me. We all stopped hanging out as a group and it just became him and Dean.

More so, if I was in the same room as Ryan he would always make his best friend Dean talk to me, or he'd use Dean as a human shield just so he himself wouldn't have to sit next to me on the sofa.

But of course I know Ryan didn't plan on his grandmother needing hip surgery, granted his timing was awful and he should've known better than to announce something like that to Jace while he is away.

With my mind full of wonder about how Jace was doing, I mindlessly made my way to the kitchen.

I opened the refrigerator and boredly looked at all of the items of food to choose from. While I knew I could cook a number of things I suppose I simply wasn't in the mood to cook.

I went to our junk drawer and pulled out a few menus from restaurants that delivered, but as I was trying to decide if Pizza or Chinese sounded better I had to put the big decision on hold as someone began knocking on my door.

When I opened the door, I was utterly shocked.

Out of all the people who could've possibly been at my door right then and now, I would have never guessed it would be Ryan standing there.

"Ryan?" I sounded.

"Cassandra." He smirked cooly.

The thing about Ryan is, he's basically a slightly older version of Jace. Their faces and style were so similar, with their obvious differences as well: Jace has light brown eyes while Ryan's are blue, Jace is a tad taller, and Jace's hair is a little more brown where as Ryan's is kind of dirty blonde.

"Well won't you invite me in, or will you simply be the rude girl I've grown to know you to be?"

I rolled my eyes and stood my ground, essentially blocking him from entering my house.

"There she is." He smirked once again.

"What do you want Ryan, it's late, I've had a long day, and I'm super starving."

He chuckled, "as luck would have it...I came to invite you out for dinner."

I didn't exactly know how to respond, of course his words basically slapped me as they came out of no where. "What are you playing at Ryan?"

At this he sighed "look Cass, I come in peace okay...I was asked to keep an eye out for you so here I am making my best attempt to keep that promise."

I melted a little, I know it couldn't have been easy for Jace to put aside his pride and call up his brother to look out for my well being in his absence.

"Fine, but I want Italian." I finally sounded.

He nodded.

"And don't expect me to order some dinky little side salad as my entree either." I added.

He smiled and nodded once more, I collected my purse and locked up before following him into his car.
