"You know." Dean sounded as we began making our way downstairs, "...we all do this for her." He admitted as he looked down at his mother with so much love. "She's always been very grandiose, she loves life and each day she's still here she celebrates it whether it's by eating whatever she wants, dressing how she likes, are big fancy parties."
I could see how everyone went all out to keep Lola happy, and happy she was as she seemed to radiantly exude elation upon anyone who was near her.
"Next time please just give me a heads up." I said as we reached the bottom of the stairs.
"Next time...so you aren't scared off yet?"
I shook my head no, "it's gonna take a lot more than arriving underdressed to scare me off."
A couple of Deans family members approached us and they made easy conversation with us. I recognized a lot of them from pack functions or school, some were from other packs but came into town specifically to meet me.
*clink clink clink*
We all turned to see Dean's parents standing on their stairs looking down on all of us.
"It's always a blessing when our family can all come together, our family...us Giles' are a proud, strong, and old family steeped in history and tradition, but today we get to meet someone who will one day potentially help to grow this family even further." Fred Giles said kindly.
"Not much pressure." Dean teased quietly as he wrapped his arms around my waist from behind.
"So tonight, I ask that you raise your glasses and help me welcome the lovely Cassandra Jones into this family."
And just like that everyone held up their glasses and I felt my cheeks heat up as suddenly every pair of eyes were on me.
After that mortifying moment I was whisked away from different family members and Dean never once let go of my hand.
I met twin cousins of Deans who were close in age to me, an older cousin who tried to sell me a time share in a state I've never been to, Dottie from lumberyard and her fiancé, a group of great aunts who complained that their husbands didn't spend enough time at home and their children were ungrateful, and I was finally saved when Lola came to our side.
"Dean, your father is looking for you dear."
"Mother..." He sounded knowingly. "Im not going to leave Cassie alone."
She came around and wrapped an arm around my shoulder delicately, "and I promise she won't be...I'll take care of our lovely Cassandra." She smiled kindly.
I could see Dean was having a hard time leaving me.
"I'll be fine...go see what you dad needs."
He smirked, "I'll be back as soon as I can."
I nodded and Lola smiled even more brightly as she looked at me than turned to the family member awaiting to speak to us. "I'm sure Cassandra would love to hear all about your year abroad but I really need to borrow her." Lola sounded gently as she pulled me away from an extremely pretentious 2nd cousin.
"I apologize for some of our family members." Lola said as she walked us toward the backyard. "I know they can be...a lot."
"Oh they're fine." I tried to assure her.
She showed me outside and together under a dark sky filled with stars we took a stroll along her vast backyard.
"This was always one of Deans favorite things to do growing up...just taking in the nights sky, it seems like we've waited quite some time for him to find you."
