CHAPTER SIX

Alicia's POV

I still wasn't getting a pulse. All I could focus on was getting Ray to breathe again. I just kept thinking, over and over and over, that he's my best friend and I need him to be okay. After what seemed like decades, I felt a shudder go through his body. I don't know what that meant, I just kept on trying to make him breathe. The tears were in a constant flow from my eyes, moistening Ray's cheeks. I was beginning to think that there was no hope, which only made me cry harder. I gasped as I felt a slight rise in his chest. I thought I was imagining it. There it was again! His mouth opened wide and he started gasping for air. I was so shocked, I just stood there in wonder. I thought he was dead. I thought I had lost my best friend. His eyes flew open, staring at the ceiling as his body convulsed. He was still gasping, but at least he was alive. I immediately got to work on his arms, ripping off my sweatshirt and wrapping it tightly around one arm to try to stop the bleeding. I took my tank top off and wrapped it around Ray's other arm. I heard banging and voices downstairs. The paramedics must be here. I heard rushed footsteps coming up the stairs and I saw two paramedics rounding the corner into Ray's room, Mikey leading the way. I stepped back as the paramedics assessed the scene. They quickly lay Ray down on a stretcher, strapping an oxygen mask to his face. He was still staring intently at the ceiling, totally unaware of what was going on, but he seemed to be breathing a little easier with the oxygen mask. Mikey grabbed my hand and pulled me down the stairs after the paramedics, right onto the ambulance behind Ray. I never noticed that I was still in just my bra and jeans until Mikey handed me a t-shirt that he must have grabbed on the way out. It was Ray's.

****************

The whole ambulance ride to the hospital Mikey and I stared in horror at Ray. The paramedics had replaced my tank top and sweatshirt bandages with huge gauze padding, but I could see the blood slowly seeping through the layers of gauze. "He's lost so much blood" Mikey whispered, breaking the silence. Before I could reply, the paramedics were back, pulling Ray off the ambulance and into the emergency room. Mikey and I ran after them, but the nurses wouldn't let us any further than the waiting room. I paced around the room aimlessly while Mikey called the guys. "They'll be here as soon as the can" Mikey said, looking at me. He opened it arms wide. I gladly ran into them, sobbing into his shoulder. I could feel his tears soaking the top of my head. I don't know how long we stayed like that, but there was no word from the doctor. Eventually I felt more people join our hug. We all pulled away and I saw that it was Gerard, LynZ, Frank and Jamia. All of them were crying, especially Gee. "This is all my fault" he sobbed. "I knew things were getting bad, but I thought things would fix themselves". "Gee, I don't think anyone realized how bad things really were getting. It isn't your fault" Mikey soothed. We all hugged again and then sat down to wait. "Where are the kids?" I asked out of the blue. "We dropped them off at my parents place on the way here" Jamia said. I was glad that they weren't here to see their parents so upset, or to see their uncle Ray like this.

Frank had gone to go get everyone coffee. He seemed to be the only one that was thinking clearly. I was mentally replaying the blood gushing out of Ray's arms and seeing his unmoving chest. Everyone thought that I should be proud of myself for getting Ray to breathe again, but I wasn't. I didn't care who got him to breathe, I just cared that he was breathing.

It was about five hours later when a doctor came out, looking tired. "Family of Ray Toro?" he asked. We all stood up. "Are we allowed to go see him?" Gee asked. "Yes, but only two people at a time." Everyone gestured for Mikey and I to go first.

The doctor led us down a long hall, to an elevator. He pushed the button for the third floor. He showed us to room number 423.

My breath caught in my throat as I entered after Mikey. Ray's wild hair was all over the white pillow. His arms were wrapped with huge pads. His eyes were closed and his breathing was a wheeze. He was hooked up to an oxygen machine. There were multiple bags of fluid being pumped into Ray through an IV. His face was still ghostly pale. He looked so much older laying there.

I pulled a chair up to his bedside and sat down. All I could do was look at him. It killed me to not be able to take the pain away.

Mikey's POV

I pulled a chair up beside Alicia's. Oh Ray... I thought. Why would he do this to himself? I immediately thought of Christa. Everything has gone down hill since Christa came into the picture. It hurt just to look at him, but I couldn't look away. He didn't look like the Ray I knew. He just looked... broken. Without looking away from him, I took Alicia's hand and squeezed it. I felt her hand tighten around mine. I knew that if she let go, I would break down.

We stayed in Ray's room for about an hour, then went back to the waiting room so that two other people could go.

Jamia was sleeping with her head against Frank's shoulder, both of their faces tear stained. Gerard and Linsey got up and asked us where Ray's room was. Alicia told them, looking like she was going to cry again. I sat down and pulled her onto my lap. She snuggled into my chest and closed her eyes. I rubbed her back, whispering soothing words to her. A few minutes later her breathing slowed and I felt her relax. I'm glad she was getting some sleep. It wasn't healthy for her or the baby to be so stressed.

I looked over at Frank and Jamia, who were both asleep now. I rested my cheek on the top of Alicia's head and fell asleep.
