I step out of the hospital. Will puts his hand on my shoulder and starts to walk me to the car. I shrug his arm off and stagger to the parking lot. I don't need his help. I'm a big girl now, and I have been since I got stuck in those alleys. Jane walks beside me and talks about how cool my brothers car is. It is cool. Its a black Avalanche truck with an American flag painted on the side. He has a whole bunch of bumper-stickers and most of them say stuff about respecting the Army and laughing at the economy today. I hop in the middle and Jane slides in behind me.
I think about Will's bumper-stickers.
"Respect the soldiers. They all fought for your freedom."
"They stood and fought when others cowered."
"Either get behind our soldiers or in front of them."
"They are true Americans."
My favorite one is the "Either get behind our soldiers or in front of them." It's true. They did something hard and life-threatening. I want to do something like that. I have gotten in fights and almost died a day or so ago.
I want to help.
I want to make a difference.
I want to fight.
I want to stand in front of others when they stand by and watch...
