"Let go of me!" I scream and try one last kick at the Taliban holding me. He only tightens his grip. He drags me over to the others and throws me on the ground between them. One kicks me in the ribs and I punch his leg. They laugh and then start talking in their own language. I try to understand their facial expressions and hand gestures, but they don't let on too much. All I know is that their talking about me.

They stop talking and then look down at me. "We will let you and your friends go. Under one condition," The leader says.

"And what's that condition?" I ask.

"Freedom for a life. For every person that leaves, we kill one person. But we will let you go for free, since that man died." He says. I look him dead in the eye. I'm free?

But only because they killed my dad.

I clench my jaw. No way. I am not letting my friends become free by killing a person in their place. But they would die anyways! I look over at Luci and her eyes say that she heard the conversation. I give her a questioning look and she nods her head.

Would it be selfish to let other people die so I could have my friends and I leave with no complications?

I look around the room. There's a few remaining people of my troop and then others that I don't know. Others with wives or husbands or maybe even kids! I couldn't let them die only because of my decisions.

"Could I go talk to them?" I ask sharply. The Taliban all nod and I walk over to the others. They're already in a circle so I sit in the middle.

"For every one person that leaves, they kill one of you. I can't let that happen." I say. I glance around at all of them. They have their heads bowed and they understand my decision.

"I know you want to be free, but that means to take another person's life for your own freedom. There's no other option." I say. To my suprise, someone speaks up.

"I'm willing to die for one of your guy's freedom." He says. I direct my vision to him and he nods his head.

"I'm gonna die anyways." He says. I look at his right leg and all there is is his knee. His leg must have ben amputated.

  'I can't let that happen." I repeat.

"There's no other way!" He shouts. I glare at him and look at the Taliban, deep in their conversation.

"There is another way!" Luci says excidetly. She was quiet the whole time we were having the discussion.

"And what is that?" I look at her. I'm excited too. There actually is a way we can get our freedom but not half of us dying to do so.

Luci drops her voice to a whisper, "We plan an escape." I look at her, a smile splayed across my face.

"We'll do it." I say and everyone nods their heads. I stand up and walk over to the Taliban. They stop talking and turn to look at me.

"Well?" The leader says. A smile is on all of the Taliban's faces.

"We deny your offer." The smiles disappear.
