Chapter 1.
I watched as the clouds rolled overhead and crashed into each other. Soon tiny droplets fell from the skies and within minutes, turned into fat droplets that could leave red marks on your skin if you were unlucky enough not to carry an umbrella today.
The rain fell steadily as there was no wind. I looked down the street and waited patiently...
There she was. Delnaz's handbag was slipping off her shoulder and her long, thick, brown hair was getting soaked. She ran around the corner with a black folder above her head.
I ran over to her and placed my umbrella over her head. Delnaz paused and stared at me with a grateful smile. She thrust the umbrella higher into the air so that it covered both of us. I was about two heads taller than her after all.
We walked slowly past an old square building that was slightly taller than Delnaz but as wide as the block of flats across it. The building was covered in a dark green moss that looked black from afar. Delnaz wrinkled her nose.
"Don't you like the smell of rain?" She just shrugged without looking at me. I gazed at Delnaz with admiration. She wore a black and white horizontally striped shirt and a red waterfall with blue jeans and red pumps. She had a few black and white bracelets on her hand. Her cheekbones were defined and stood out more when she smiled. She used a pink-red lipstick that made her full lips seem fuller and black eyeliner. Her darks eyes had a sparkle, especially when she laughed. Her minimal use of makeup made her seem ever so beautiful.
Delnaz caught me looking at her.
"What?" She gave me a look that said: you look ridiculous staring at me that way.
"If you think that I look weird it's because my maternal grandmother is Indian and my gradfather is Azeri."
I stared at Delnaz, shell-shocked."I see." Now that I was aware of it, Delnaz really did look exotic. She did have a very Indian face I supposed.
As we walked Delnaz and I spoke about high school. We were in matric (grade 12). After a few moments of deafening silence she asked,
"How did you know I would come running around the corner without an umbrella?"
"Simple: I was going out and I saw you so I thought that I'd help a lady in distress." At the very moment, a window on the higher storey of the block of flats we walked by slammed shut to confirm that I may have been telling her a white lie.
