Chapter 29.
Delnaz's POV
"How did you find the exam, Deli?"
I shrugged in reply. Maths was not my best friend. Yıldız and I were walking to our classrooms to collect our study materials before leaving for home. Our phones had been taken in by the invigilators. My final matric exam was over. To say that I was relieved would have been an understatement. I'd been waiting for this day all my life! Now I had to focus on other aspects of my life, such as my family, boyfriend and friends.
I still couldn't believe that I had a boyfriend. I felt like the luckiest girl in the world because my boyfriend's the best. My heart broke when I suddenly I saw Fuad rush down the corridor. It was difficult not to notice the flash of a neon yellow bib amongst the throng of students, especially since it was in my direct line of vision.
Fuad's wearing his football kit?
Next to me, Yıldız was texting furiously. Her brow was furrowed and she was oblivious to the world around her.
"Let me guess, you guys were supposed to go out but Cihan now has other commitments?"
Yıldız sighed. "You know me too well, Delnaz. Him and I were supposed to go on to the park on an ice-cream date today. I mean, the weather is absolutely amazing! Now he says that he had football practise and forgot to tell me about it earlier." My best friend paused for a short while as she replied to another text. Her phoned beeped several more times before she locked it and shoved it into the pocket of her faded jeans. "You know what? It's actually good that we can't meet up. We've been spending too much together and ignoring the people and world around us. That's apparently unhealthy for relationships and we've continued to ignore that. Now that we can't meet up, I'm disappointed but also finding that I owe myself a break." For once, Yıldız sounded mature. Normally her motto would have been 'bae comes first' or something to that effect.
That low moment when your best friend makes you their second priority.
Realisation hit and my eyes widened at her words. Was she talking about that kind of break that entails travelling across the country just to get away from the spontaneous, suffocating presence of the one that you love?
She noticed my expression and giggled. "I mean, I just need to spend more time with friends and family, not just Cihan. We have like 2 months of summer holiday. Let's make it count yeah?"
"Yeah. You have a good point there," I said, fingering the straps of my sundress. The heat of the Turkish summer was unbearable. Usually, I would have worn jeans to school but with the skyrocketing temperatures, that was out of the question. "We haven't seen each other much recently. I know that exams have gotten in the way and that totally comes first but we need to hang out more. We need a girls' night out perhaps."
I watched as my best friend's eyes lit up. "You're right! Anyway, we need to to shopping. I need a dress for Saturday."
"Oh. What's the occasion?"
Yıldız facepalmed on account of me being as absent minded as a fruit fly. "You're kidding me right? Say, Delnaz, do you have an outfit for Saturday?" She tried to get me to catch on but I failed to recall what was happening on Saturday. "Fuad's going to meet your parents you crazy child!" Yıldız cried out as she swatted my arm.
"Ouch! Okay, alright..." I rubbed my forearm, trying to relieve the stinging sensation that Yıldız's attack brought with it.
"You don't have anything to wear, do you?"
I shook my head ashamedly. I had totally forgotten about finding something to wear for the day.
I totally forgot that Fuad was to meet my parents!
