"How come you are a better cook than me?" I ask Tobias while I take a mouthful of pancakes. I spent the night so we're all having breakfast together. Olivia sits next to me and I feed her. She might be smarter than other six-year-olds but she still needs a little help with a few things. Tobias laughs and shrugs.
"Well, I had a lot of practice" He says casually. Sometimes I totally forget that he has been abused repeatedly for years and years at home by his father. He seems so over it (but he isn't . . . The fear in his eyes is obvious). He was the one who cooked for Olivia and himself, and he did have a lot of practice.
"By the way, why was Nita –the babysitter– here yesterday?" I ask while I cut the pancakes with my knife and carefully feed it to Olivia.
"Well this little duck still can't take a shower on her own, and she is embarrassed if I help her, so Nita comes every day to give her a bath or a shower, or help her with girl stuff in general" He says.
"Is she coming today?" I ask and he nods. I feel the urge to say "She's a little to pretty for a babysitter, isn't she?" and slap him across the face, but I don't. I shouldn't even be jealous, there is nothing to be jealous about. But I just feel this feeling. Betrayal? No. Disappointment? No.
I don't even understand myself but Im just not happy that he got a babysitter after he told Olivia he wouldn't.
Though he is right, he can't help Olivia with girl stuff.
"Was she the babysitter she hated?" I ask calmly–trying to hide my anger. He doesn't answer and neither does Olivia. "Do you hate her anymore?" I ask Olivia and she shakes her head, hesitating. I give her another bite.
"Okay, tell me why you're mad" he says.
"Im not mad" I snap.
"Of course you're not" he says sarcastically. I sigh and he gets up, sitting a little closer to me. "Tell me, what's wrong?"
"Call and tell her that you won't need her to babysit anymore" I say, not answering his question.
"What? Why?"
"Because Im here" I say. "I can take care of Olivia" I say giving Olivia her last bite.
"I can't" he says. "She also tides up the house"
"I can do that too" I say getting a little competitive as I grab the plates from the table and put them on the sink.
"Tris, you don't have to" he says. He is being very kind and patient about all this, while I blurt with anger inside me as I try to hide it.
"Why are you desperately wanting her to work here?!" I raise my voice. Olivia stops playing with her dolls and Tobias and her just stare at me. They're both confused and shocked at how fast I snapped. Tobias slowly stands up and approaches me.
"Tris, calm down" his quiet voice says as he grabs my hands and holds them. "Fine, I'll call her right now. I just don't want you to spend your time cleaning the house and taking care of Olivia all the time. I just wanted you to have fun this summer" he says and pulls me to his embrace. I close my eyes as I listen to his calm heartbeat.
"I'm sorry. . . I don't know what's up with me" I say, my voice muffled by his shirt. "I'm just getting worried that you'll be over me and—"
"For god's sake, Tris" he says. "Don't ever think that. Don't believe for a second that I am interested in someone else but you" his quiet voice soothes me as he strokes my hair.
"One day, I wish someone will love me like you love each other" Olivia says quietly–kind of ruining the moment (which she does a little often, but it's still adorable). I laugh a bit and so does Tobias. We pull back and look at Olivia while she swings her feet that dangle from the chair.
"Should I call the babysitter now or—"
"No, its fine. But she doesn't have to come every single day though. Now that Im here I'll be spending more time with you guys since it's summer" I say and he nods smiling.
"Also, today we're going to the Pedrard's house for a get-together since you came back, but someone else will be babysitting Olivia"
"Wait, why someone else?" I ask. "I thought we agreed on Nita doing that"
"Nita will be at the get-together too" he says. "She transferred schools on the second semester last year–when you left. She has been hanging with us since then"
"Oh" is all I manage to say. Now Im not angry, or mad. Im feel hurt. I feel threatened. She kind of "replaced" me when I left. "I need to go now, to get ready and . . . Yeah." I say while my voice breaks a little and I walk out of the house, i close the door as I slowly walk back to my house.
Wasn't this supposed to be a get-together for me? If so, why would she be invited? I don't even know her.
I am starting to think that Chicago is cursed. I've been here for just two days and a lot of things happened:
Olivia got hit by a fucking car.
I went unconscious twice.
I got accused for killing my own ex-boyfriend.
And now this situation with Nita!
I go up to my room and start getting ready for the get-together (which I doubt I'll have fun at).
