Friday morning I had an eerie feeling upon getting to work. Up until that point I was fine really.
The day out with Marcus had been great. We had watched the sunset from the hill, it was one of the most beautiful things I've seen in a while. The harmony that nature presented on the hill was just what I needed to forget all life's trials.
True to my word I had eaten everything in the basket by nights end, and in my defense Marcus had helped.
Usually guys would want women to put up a facade and pretend as if they eat only small portions but Marcus didn't seem to mean that my appetite had surpassed the normal female's.I worked smartly in order to finish the work I had missed out on on Thursday. At about 9:30 I saw a memo in my email from Mr. Collins requesting that I attend a meeting in his office at 10am this morning. I knew he did not want to ask about my well-being so what did he need?
Again the eerie feeling resurfaced and this time I couldn't shake it.At almost 10 I got my tablet and went to his office. His secretary told me he was in a meeting and to have a seat, lo and behold Candace Helps emerged a minute later.
"Glad to see you've upgraded to the office and not the store rooms Candace."
For some reason she didn't look perturbed, she actually looked victorious.
"Yes, and that's not the only thing I have been upgraded to. But in due time. Ta ta."What the hell was she talking about?
I went inside and Mr. Collins was seated at his desk with his poker face on. Okay then, this isn't weird at all.
I waited and stared at him as we sat in silence.
"How much do you value your job Ms. Daniels?"
"Very much, I think that my talents have been quite beneficial to this company as well as being here has taught me many things. I'm truly grateful to be a part of such an organization."
"Well then, this makes what I'm about to say very hard. Ms Daniels I'm sorry but we have to let you go."
I sat unmoving, not believing my ears. For a while I was rendered mute. I did not even blink as I stared at this pathetic man.
"Well, I must say this is shocking Mr. Collins. But also not really."
"There is still a way to save your job though." He said it smirking at me, I knew what he was insinuating but I wanted him to explicitly say it.
"And what's that way?"
By now he was on my side of the table, playing with the strands of my hair.
"If you are nice to me, I can be very nice to you."
"Oh I see, well I'm going to pass anyways. Just out of curiosity when will my replacement be picked?"
"She already has been, she'll be starting on Monday."
"Monday? Which Monday. I'm required to receive two weeks notice."
"Yeah but let's face it, she's much nicer to have around the office, if you know I mean. So I thought it was best for her to come in early.
Your desk should be cleared by tomorrow the latest, please leave company files so that she can hit the ground running when she gets here.
Please remember you aren't allowed to use the ideas you developed here in any future company. I hope that you'll have a good day.""Oh, I will because apparently you did not read the fine print all those years ago. Remember when you fired me, and Mr. Gordon, you know the owner and chairperson of this company rehired me? We made a few changes to the contract. Like intellectual property developed under my name here, belongs to me. Not the company so I am within my right to take everything I came up with and I just may exercise my right. Thank you for doing me such a big favor as well."
He looked at me confused.
"In due time Mr. Collins. Due time."
I got back to my desk and started packing up. My first instinct was to be sad but I had bigger plans. I made my call to set them in motion.
"Jhanese Wade, how may I help you?"
"Hey, Jhan, it's Lila. Can I stop by later? I have another case I need you to handle along with the burglary. It's a sexual harassment and unlawful termination. I want to sue."
"I'm free at 1. Come by with the details."
"One is perfect."
I packed up all my belongings cheerily, emailed my clients and let them know that I was no longer employed to the company. Food the necessary formalities with IT so that my login could be deactivated and left with a smile.

Jhanese Wade was a beautiful woman, she embodied 'black don't crack' because people never believed that she was actually Jamal's mother. Growing up he got into trouble more than once for defending our classmates against his "sister," one time he went as far as almost choking a random stranger while we were at dinner.
Even now she looked like she hadn't aged since I met her.
"Lila, darling. I must say I am really upset with you. You haven't been by in so long. You look so beautiful, like you're glowing."
"I know I was working nonstop but I guess I have all the time in the world now."
"Let's talk shall we."
Alex, Candace and Collins won't know what hit them when Jhanese and I were done with them.
