Isla's POV

~~~
I step out of my shower and wrap myself in a towel. It is then that I observe my body.
Long, naturally straight brown hair that ends right above my belly button. I have learned to love my body. It was beautiful, not something any girl would be ashamed to have. Not to sound self centered, but I love my body and I hope someday, another person will too.
Like Daniel, The nagging voice in my head spoke.
I knew I shouldn't cling onto anymore feelings of Daniel. I just couldn't help it. He was my first love and I wasn't sure when I would be ready to over come it.
I brush through my freshly washed hair and think back to the Instagram post of Daniel I saw last night.
It was him and his supposed fiancee together at the beach with the caption, I can't believe she said yes! Also attached was a ring emoji. Just the thought brought stinging tears to my eyes.
I can't believe he did that. He seemed like just yesterday we admitted our feelings for each other.
At first I tried to keep in touch with Daniel. He never said anything back so I figured he was busy studying. He wasn't ever able to visit and eventually it came down to us liking each other's social media posts and occasionally commenting. Occasionally, being the key word.
I thought when Daniel came back, we would continue our relationship like in my many dreams. Obviously now, that was never going to happen. I put on my specified nurse clothing and pulled my hair into a top knot bun. I applied minimal makeup, and brushed my teeth.
Walking back into my room I turn off all the lights to let Jenna sleep some more. She considered herself an author and worked at our apartment. She made pretty decent living. Jenna wrote small dialogues, occasionally would illustrate a book and she also has published two of her own works. She is working on a third.
I couldn't be more proud of my best friend.
After I got out of that car, the night of prom, I was extremely giddy. Daniel and me both admitted or feelings and he asked me out on a date. He normally took things slow, but I expected he would ask me to be his girlfriend before he left.
I immediately enter the house and call Jenna. I could have called Trevor too, but some things you could only confide in with girls.
"Hey girl, guess what!" I repeat the whole car session to my soon to be replacement best friend.
When I finish Jenna is happy too and I can hear her smile through the phone. "You have been waiting so long for this! I can't wait for him to officially be yours." She stops speaking for a moment and I know she lost her smile. "But, he's leaving soon, Isla. What are you going to do?"
My happy mood falters. I completely forgot about it in my state of complete joy and relief. "Maybe we could try a long distance relationship." I spoke while biting my thumb. "I never wanted to, but with how long we've known each other, I think it will work out."
Little did I know what was coming out of my mouth were complete and utter lies.
"I know that you two can work it out. You have wanted this for too long to let this go. I know you Isla. As long as you have confidence and believe, you will make this work. You are not the kind of girl who lets go of what she loves."
By know my smile was back on my face and I was almost back to feeling good again.
Sadly, my good fortunes wouldn't last long.
~~~

Jenna was still asleep when I left the apartment.

I guess Jenna really did care because last night she set out a granola bar with a little note that read, Here is your very special breakfast. Don't wake me up, but I hope you have a great day at your new job.

I roll my eyes. Classic Jenna. I grab the granola bar and head out to my car. As I drive to the hospital I over possible scenarios if I really do see Daniel.

We haven't talked in so long, he could have completely changed. For the better or worse, I wouldn't know. Even though I can tell he is over me, I still want us to be friends. At least then I'll get some part of Daniel, even if it isn't my ideal relationship.

When I applied for this job, Daniel's dad Derrick, was currently the head administrator at the hospital. He was very happy to see me and treated me kindly. I knew I would get the job since I had known him as long as I had known Daniel.

I walk through the main doors and go up to the secretary. "I'm Isla Wood, here for my first day."

The woman working as the secretary looked up my name and then handed me a name tag with my face. "You will need to wear that every day and clip it to your scrubs. Also, Dr. Parkes would like to speak with you before you begin."

My heart thundered in my chest like waves in a hurricane. I sure hope she was talking about Daniel's dad.

I smile warmly at her to cover up my nervousness. "Sure, what floor is he on?"

"Floor number 6 and just follow the signs to his office."

"Thank you so much, I hope you have a great day!" I smile at her and walk towards the elevator. Once in I press the number six and listen to the cheesy elevator music that reminded me of Hotline Bling.

I step out of the elevator and enter what must be the business floor. There were a lot of little desk cubicles and a few doors that I could only assume led to offices.

I didn't see any signs or directions in my immediate vision, so I look around to ask someone. A young girl, probably my age, walks up to me. "Do you need any help, you like you are meant to be in the nursing area." She giggles but her smile is genuine. "I'm Alyssa, by the way." She extends her hand that is full of nails coated a bright purple.

I could tell that she put a lot of effort into her look. Her bleach blonde hair was effortlessly curled and was shoulder length. Alyssa wore popping coral lipstick and typical business woman attire. She did add lots of sparkly bracelets and a necklace though.

I grab her hand and shake firmly. "I'm Isla, it's my first day. I was requested to talk to Dr. Parkes for some instructions first, I assume."

Her eyes widen and she giggles once again. "He is right this way," She starts to lead me down a separate hallway. "You are sure lucky. Usually he is dealing with patients all day and doesn't have much time to meet with people. Much less a beautiful girl like yourself."

My hands started to shake. I was pretty sure who I was being taken to.

I don't know why I got so nervous.

This was just Daniel, my best friend who I was also in love with. But he was engaged.

I have a feeling this is going to be a long journey.

"Well here he his. I hope we can talk more Isla. I work up here but if you want to go get lunch sometime, I would really like it!" Alyssa invited me.

"I would love to, you seem so... fun! I will see you later," I wave and smile at her as she turns away to go back to work. I see her slightly sashaying.

Taking a deep breath, I face the door. I hadn't seen him in so long, who knew what would happen. All I focused on was keeping my feelings concealed. He was engaged for goodness sake! I would feel awful ruining his happiness even if it crushed mine.

I knock on the door and turn the handle. Sitting pretty in all his doctor get up, was Daniel.
