• Evan •I walk down an aisle in the auditorium towards the designated rows for the seniors with my best friend, Mackenzie. It's August and the start of our senior year. All the students are suppose to be meeting in the auditorium this morning for a welcome back to school thing and an introduction to the new principal.
Mackenzie could not be more excited about it being our senior year. She's looking forward to graduating and going off to college, where she can have the time of her life.
Not that I'm not excited, I sort of am. I just have no idea what I'm going to do with my life. I don't know what I want to go to college for, unlike Mackenzie. She has it all planned out. She knows what she wants to do and she already has a couple of colleges picked out.
I scan the group of seniors already sitting in the rows, looking for a familiar face and Mackenzie is doing the same. I spot the back of a head full of wavy dark brown hair and narrow my eyes.
Christian Lockwood.
If this was a comic book and I was a super hero, he would be my arch nemesis. He's a stuck up jerk who thinks he's better than everyone else because his parents have money and his I-don't-know-how-many-greats grandfather helped fund and build this school, Lockwood Academy.
He's got mismatched eyes that girls seem to love, but I think they're weird. One is a deep brown color and the other is a light blue. Looking into his eyes gives me shivers, if I'm being completely honest. His hair is brown and that makes the blue eye stand out so much more.
He's got a perfectly chiseled jaw and high cheek bones. You wouldn't believe how many girls that he has hitting on him, he never lets me forget about it though. Always rubbing it in my face, but I couldn't care less. He's a conceited asshole.
I hate him for obvious reasons and he hates me too, although I'm not sure why. Freshman year was the year we met. We had both started high school and he seemed to automatically hate me. For all three years of high school so far, we've had this rivalry.
We have pranked each other, fought each other, and anything else we could do to make each other's lives difficult. Kind of surprised neither one of us has been expelled or suspended yet. I guess that must be because Christian's family built the school and if they did something to me, they would have to give him the same punishment.
"There she is!" Mackenzie announces, putting a stop to my thoughts of The Jerk. I furrow my brows, wondering who she's pointing at, and look over to the person.
Oh, yeah.
Mackenzie pulls me along and we reach Hannah quickly. She's standing in front of a seat with two empty ones beside her that she most likely saved for us. Mackenzie greets her first and pulls her into a hug. I do the same after Mackenzie and when I pull back from the hug I kiss her.
Only two seconds after my lips touch hers we're both pulling away. We've been dating for a year now, but both of us think that hardcore PDA is pretty gross and uncalled for.
"I missed you. I wish you could have went with us." Hannah says with a smile.
During summer vacation she went away with her family to some place in Europe. I can't really remember where she went though. She wanted me to come, but her parents wouldn't let her bring me. Something about family bonding.
Plus, it's a lot of money that I'm sure they wouldn't want to pay for me, considering I'm not exactly as well off as them and wouldn't have the money for it myself. I wasn't really heartbroken that I couldn't go, but I did miss her. When I thought about her, anyway. Wow, that sounds kind of shitty.
Mackenzie and I just spent a lot of the summer hanging out doing nothing. Mostly just spending time in the basement of her house. It's kind of like a big entertainment room. There's a large flatscreen with a PlayStation and a pool table. They also have the most comfortable couch. It's one of those big L shaped ones.
Kenzie and I just binge watched different shows on Netflix really. I like that show Criminal Minds. Spencer Reid is probably my favorite character, to be honest. He's pretty cool, in a dorky kind of way.
"I missed you too, Hannah." I reply and sit down the seat next to hers. Mackenzie is already sitting in the one on the other side of me.
Hannah takes her seat, smoothing down her white sundress. It's got tiny little yellow daisies on it and she's wearing a pair of brown strappy looking sandals. She looks really cute and innocent with her long red hair and freckles.
When she's in her seat I take her hand in mine and look over at her with a small smile. The auditorium is mostly full now and a tall blond haired woman walks up to the front of the stage with a microphone in her hand. Standing to her side are a couple of other adults. One I recognize as the councilor.
The woman asks for everyone to quiet down and once all the students are settled she introduces herself as our new principal, Mrs. Archibald. She goes on and on about how she is no nonsense and doesn't take disrespect towards other students, teachers, or anyone else. When she finishes up the councilor starts to talk about classes and such. How we may need to change them and to come to his office if we do.
I tune out the rest of the people, because I'm pretty sure they aren't going to say anything I don't already know. When they finished up they told the students to go to their third period class.
I got out the schedule the office gave me at open house and looked over it to see which class I have third period. I glance over at Kenzie's schedule as she holds it out and see that we have all the same classes.
"Awesome. Hannah where's your schedule?" I ask and Hannah digs through her book bag that is sitting in front of her.
She pulls out her schedule and hands it to me. I scan her classes quickly and hand it back to her with a frown.
"That sucks, we only have second and fifth together."
"Awe! At least you have Mackenzie. Who knows who I'll be stuck in a class with." Hannah says with a pout.
"Well, we better get to class. C'mon, Evan. Catch you later Hannah!" She calls as she drags me away by the arm.
I look back and lock eyes with Hannah. She doesn't seem very happy about Kenzie dragging me away. I wave bye to her as we leave. If she's mad then I'll just have to buy her a smoothie or something.
The rest of the day goes by pretty quickly with no trouble from Christian. I'm kinda surprised. He usually does something on the first day back.
Hannah didn't really talk to me fifth period, so I take it that she is mad at me. Me, Hannah, and Mackenzie are all walking to the parking lot right now. Mackenzie rode to school with me because she doesn't have a car and she lives pretty close to me. Hannah has her own car.
"I could go for a smoothie, what about you guys?" I suggest, looking at the girls.
"Sounds good!" Kenzie says happily. She loves smoothies. I look to Hannah and she nods her head. Awesome.
