14: Busted
By the time Faye was dropped near her building, it was already past midnight.
She had to sleep. Today was the first day for the new semester.
She was walking up to her apartment building, almost wobbling as she went, when a very unexpected voice called her.
"Faye?"
Faye tensed, halting just at the first step that led up to her home. She dared a glance over her shoulder, and sure enough, Cain Vanderbilt was standing there.
Her eyes widened, not in alarm, but in awe at him.
He was Cain, but... different.
Instead of his trademark all-black appearance, he wore a long-sleeve white shirt. His hair was a little mussed but she noticed that he had shaved.
"I know it's late," he spoke again, sounding unsure.
Wait! Cain unsure?
"...But can we talk?" he continued. Faye was very surprised at herself. She was supposed to be angry at this demon, furious even, after the stunt he pulled with her. But as she watched him standing there, shifting from foot to foot, she found herself smiling at him.
"Uh... what time is it?" she chuckled, looking down at her cracked wristwatch.
"Shit! I know, it's pretty late." Cain covered his face with both hands, wiping his face down and chuckled.
At that sound, Faye found herself in a momentary shock. He sounded nice. Really nice, and before she realized what she was saying, she uttered, "You should laugh more, Cain."
He looked at her, hand stopping midway through his hair before it fell to his side. "Look, I came here to... well, apologies for what I did." He suddenly said, his voice serious and sincere, "It was stupid, and uncalled for. You were just trying to help and I went and..."
"Apology accepted, Cain." Faye said softly, truthfully. The thing was, Faye wasn't really mad at him. Especially when he took the time to come here just to make sure she forgave him.
Cain stopped talking, watching her with wide eyes, obviously trying to read something in her words. Maybe a note of sarcasm or something.
Faye chuckled at his expression, "Seriously! Don't worry about it," she waved her hand, "we all do silly mistakes, but in the end, you did the right thing." She gave him a full smile, "I'm so proud of you for doing that test. I actually feel undeserving of that salary. You kinda did the whole thing yourself. You are amazing."
It was comical how much he tried to hide his embarrassment. Suddenly he frowned, stepping closer to her as he said with all seriousness, "You deserved every penny."
She watched his Adam-apple pop after his little statement and she felt her cheeks heat, "Thanks." She muttered, tucking a huge curl behind her ear.
Feeling the chilled air around them turning warmer, Faye stepped back, giving him a smile, "we better get to bed,"
Shit! That sounded really wrong and Faye's whole face heated. She felt flushed even more when an unfamiliar, huge smile broke across Cain's face, obviously grabbing on the pun.
"We better." He drawled, his voice dropping to a dangerous level.
"I mean," she chuckled nervously, stepping back into the first stair, "school starts this morning, you know. We should get some sleep. I should get some sleep. In... in my home. You should too! Sleep that is! In your own home, er." She stammered like a complete idiot, realizing she was on the third step, which made her a few inches higher than him.
