That morning, I woke up to the sweet sound of birds chirping, the breeze rustling the leaves of the trees, and Veela hitting X with a frying pan repeated times... or at least, that's what I heard.
There was a sound of a frying pan hitting something, and X's voice yelped out,
"Ouch! Stop that! I just woke up! What's up with you?"
"Eh?" I slowly asked, blinking my eyes open. The first view I got was that of Karma's back.
"Good morning, child," she said, "You're up just in time to witness Veela beating the everliving life out of our good friend, X... with a frying pan. I don't really know why, though, so don't ask me... kettle corn?"
"What?" I asked. In the morning, I tend to have absolutely no comprehension of anything whatsoever, and I will be that way for the next half hour. Seriously, you could tell 'morning-me' that the sky is blue, and my mind would be absolutely blown. Saying that 'Veela is beating up X with a frying pan', and then asking me if I wanted kettle corn would be way too much for my poor little brain to handle.
"I said," Karma repeated, "Veela is beating up our good friend X with a frying pan for no reason whatsoever. Also, do you want kettle corn?"
I slowly sat up and mumbled,
"Sure... just let me wake up a little bit first."
"Alright," Karma sighed, "But if you take longer than five minutes, I'll electrify you. Not fatally, so don't worry, but just to the extent that you'll be up."
I quickly sat straight up and exclaimed,
"I'm awake! See? No need to electrocute innocent humans in any way, shape, or form!"
"You're not a human," Veela hissed. It was the first time she had spoken in the brief minute or so that I had been awake, and she seemed furious. I leaned back and said,
"Woah, someone seems a little angry... why? Is it because I'm not a human?"
"No," she replied, "It's because X exists. That's why. Get back here you stupid shadow!"
The last comment was directed at X as she swung a frying pan at him. X was floating in midair, dodging the blows with ease, but it was pretty clear that his luck would run out soon.
"Please stop hitting at me," he begged, "I didn't even do anything wrong!"
"You woke up... sleeping next to me... you weird... shadow..." Veela hissed. X sighed, quickly dodging another swing, and said,
"I was tired. We all were. I had to sleep, and besides, you didn't seem to have a problem with Braken sleeping in here!"
"Please don't bring me into this," Braken mumbled from the other side of the camper, "I wanted to have a nice, relaxing morning..."
Veela didn't seem to hear him as she muttered,
"Braken is a sweet little muffin! I don't care if there are sweet little muffins sleeping in here. You, on the other hand..."
She swung the frying pan especially fast, and it met its target, sending X flying across the camper, narrowly missing Karma and I.
"Home run," Veela softly remarked.
"Veela, shame on you!" Karma exclaimed, "You do not play baseball using your friends, even if those friends are annoying!"
Veela shrugged, and calmly sat down.
"I'm fine with it," she said, "Besides, he's a sort of friend... not an actual, truly, closer-than-close friend."
From behind us, X exclaimed,
