Series One, Episode Five - Then Magic Shall Die (March 29, 2013)

Deciding based on reports of magic from council people; a distressed Charlie makes his first television appearance in four years. As Nickey and Maya discuss cases over breakfast, they are forced to watch as the Mayor threatens 'two teenage criminals' - never directly referring to them as Powers, or to magic. Despite this, Maya picks up on his agenda - frantically discussing with Nickey his next course of action. Together, they decide it would be best to find Arianna, worrying that she may have placed herself in a position of danger. Quickly moving as they leave the house, they rush to the school where Nickey left her. Realising it is a Saturday; the only help is a janitor - who hands them Letitia's number.

January 27, 1998. A beautiful young woman arrives to her baby shower - taken aback by all the love and support in her pregnancy with twins. Greeted by her husband's parents, Vera expresses her sadness at his late arrival. Talking to her friends and playing games, she excitedly welcomes her partner upon his arrival - young councilman Charlie Neinford. He takes her into the house, revealing that construction of the council's new 'Power House' is complete; Vera excited about the news. With an urgent work call, Charlie is forced to leave. The pregnant Vera takes a photo alone - the same which Charlie has in 2014. The next day at the hospital, a lone Vera is terrified by their estimated arrival date, March 1st - a Power day.

Waking Arianna after she decides to sleep in, Letitia is forced to show her Vera's latest message - a video of Charlie's threat. Completely worried, Arianna feels she cannot hide from the teacher any further, revealing her Powership. After a short discussion regarding the situation, they rush to drive and leave the city. At the CBD's border, Ari begins to realise that she needs Nickey and cannot run from the issue. Upon their arrival home, they discover a message on the phone from Nickey, asking them to meet him at the main "Little Mike's", a fast food restaurant. The girls share a discussion, Letitia worried that she will lose Ari. In a heartfelt moment, Ari responds, saying "There's no way I'd let myself lose the mother I love."

March 1, 1998. Called to an immediate evening council meeting, Charlie is forced to give the order to begin searching for Powers after much discussion. Knowing Vera has gone into labour, a cowardly Charlie watches the hospital from the opposite pier. After receiving word that the Powers have been captured, the teary eyed man presses a small button on his belt - and watches, crying, as the hospital explodes in flames. He speaks to the Mayor on the phone, who reveals that Charlie will replace him the next day. As he sits at the park, a boy recognises him from TV. The eleven year old Tristan Mendorne talks to him - revealing his dream of politics; starting a friendship.

Knowing the Mayor's threat to mean the Powers, Mina works to grab their identity files from the protected database. The criminal and Julien converse, speaking of how he found Mina, and revealing his name to be Milton as a sign of trust. Kara continues to talk unknowingly, begging an escape from the dangerous home. Julien goes walking with Mina, who reveals it may be months before she forces her way into the Asylum's mainframe. The postman tells her more of his childhood, expressing his wish to swap places with his sister. Mina reveals that they must alert the council about Nickey, while a scared Julien tries to stop her.

Sharing a meal inside the restaurant, Nickey and Maya speak of his fear - seeing Ari after so many months. They edge closer to the wall, not wanting to be heard talking of Powership. Caught by surprise, the manager reveals that a criminal is within - prompting immense fear in both of the cousins. He forces the patrons to stay put, locking them in, as Maya reveals she can handle it as a legitimate police officer. John, the manager, locks himself in the office, as Ari approaches the door. Despite being separated by glass, the reuniting twins cry in fear, expressing their wish to be together. As sirens scream down the road, Ari & Letitia rush to drive off. When the thief in the building escapes by breaking glass, the Fertaine cousins escape, pretending to go after him.

Sitting in his office drinking alone, Charlie watches as Tristan walks in. Reminding the mayor of the night they met, Charlie gets upset. Revealing to an unsurprised councilman that he is the twins' father, he cries over condemning them to a horrible life, horribly saying he justified it with the thought 'then magic shall die'. As Tristan leaves to see Maya, the mayor warns him that keeping secrets will kill him. As the phone rings late at night, the distraught Charlie answers it to the voice of a malevolent Vera. Revealing that she is alive, the horrified mayor cannot speak - only listening to her taunts and promises of revenge. Charlie angrily responds, saying "I'm their father. I know what's best for them. You know what's best for them now? The electric chair" - as he violently slams down the phone and leaves.
