Series Three, Episode Four - Undivded by Law (August 23, 2013)
The morning after enormous celebration in UT-19, Juan and Yuen begrudgingly discuss their hangovers. Joined by the three women, Yuen expresses news of his contact being ready for them early; generating discussion. Taking a walk through the city streets, Maya and Mina question Lulu regarding her plans, and she reveals she would rather stay, having had bad experiences in Aeternam. That night, the five once again share dinner and conversation, as the tunnel is again confronted by soldiers. The two militia are stopped by other residents; both repeatedly demanding Juan’s capture. As more storm in, led by Mark, a vicious brawl ensues – with people on both sides losing their lives. Mark continues to taunt, reminding them that the military have the guns, as Team Juan attempt to make a stealthy escape. Suddenly, Mark appears before them; rifle drawn. Demanding Juan to come; the Bandana Man instead tells him that either all come – or he will not.
Stressed immensely from the fear of being at work, Edmund invites Vera to take a day off work at the park. Repeatedly viewing the envelope pictures on her phone and making notes; the woman is approached by a young girl named Lien, identical to the imaginary girl from a year before. As the girl comments on Vera’s apparent insanity for self-conversing, she enquires more into Vera’s life, though she cannot remember anything to tell. Surprisingly, Charlie places himself by Vera’s side, making her jump. The couple discuss Charlie’s absence from work; he revealing he felt his wife’s safety should come first. The two talk more with Lien of her home life, surprising the adults when she simply runs; Vera commenting that they should just let her go. Strolling down to the lake, the couple enjoy an impromptu date. As they watch the morning animals wake up, Lien approaches a man at the swings. She and her father talk, as he tells her that Vera knows something – carrying Lien away with anger.
Hood drawn, Leah sneaks onto a Cross Aeternam Line train, lacking the money to buy a ticket. As she reads the newspaper over the shoulder of a man in front of her, Leah sees no news of things she knows. Suddenly, the train comes to an immediate stop outside a small town. Leah speaks to those around her; all adults, finding out about their lives to pass the time. A ticket inspector passes through; Leah hiding, which prompts the adults to question her upon his leave – each offering a form of rejected assistance. The young girl chooses to move through the carriages, finding one to sit down by herself. As she begins to fall asleep, as the radio plays and the train takes off, a man in a suit seats himself next to her. Revealing his knowledge that Leah is travelling illegally; the two talk more, and he tells of his name being Deniel. When Leah mentions Laurence, two other men burst in – the train stopping as chloroform knocks Leah out.
Seated violently in the back of a truck, Juan and the group fearfully discuss Nickey & Arianna, though Yuen assures them that things will be alright. Told to keep quiet by Mark, he drives from the capital city, to a military base in the middle of nowhere. As they are taken to the firing range, Maya attempts to resist, but only ends with injuries. Mark speaks loudly of Juan’s crimes, as he lines the five up – a rifle aimed at them. Their hands are tied; Juan speaks back against Torquebit’s military leader. Suddenly, a bullet penetrates Mark’s skull, shot by the “Lone Ranger” who had earlier rescued Juan. Blindfolding the team and firing other militia, the mystery man forces them again into a truck, to Mina’s disapproval. Despite shouts, he simply continues to drive, hidden by a mask.
Surrounded by Darcy and Vander as he wakes, Laurence immediately bombards the two with many questions. Vander attempts to answer all; promising Laurence that both he and the teenager will protect him. Later that day, the young teen explains the goals of the Reclamation and Laurence’s role. Worried, the child speaks of being forced to cry for a man years before, too specifying that he mentioned the Lockaway Crystal. Darcy offers to take Laurence through the streets of the city, to his horror; the child explaining Tony’s child abuse & his sister’s ideal to find Maya Firrick – too adding his fear that Tony will find him. Quickly, Vander returns from his day job as a stage magician with dinner. The three boys enjoy each other’s company, despite all their differences.
Arriving to an abandoned coast military base, Team Juan, Yuen & Lulu are let out by their mystery saviour. He & Yuen speak, evidently knowing each other, as their blindfolds are removed, and the five are led to a small military boat. One by one, The Lone Ranger restores their vision, and takes off his own mask. Revealing himself as Yuen’s contact, the young man introduces him as Henry Mendorne, prompting Maya to speak of Tristan, upsetting both. As everyone begins to speak, Henry insists that they must leave. Juan asks of Nickey & Ari, but Lulu returns from the ship to say that they are already on board. Telling that they will need border passes to escape; Yuen heartbreakingly reveals that their hasty leave means that he only has two. Following thanks and a goodbye, Mina offers to stay, saying “I have no family or life there. Go, and Juan, get her home safe.” A tearful goodbye ensues as they leave, Henry at the wheel, waving to Yuen, Lulu and Mina.
Edmund enjoys dinner with Charlie and Vera; the three adults discussing the latest news & Novus Somnium’s state of affairs. The next morning, Edmund & Vera are involved in a near-crash with a limousine, though both make it to work safely. Following a day of difficult patients, the friends drink together, as Vera reveals the pictures. The woman confronts Edmund, asking if she was really in a coma. An argument ensues, ending with her forcing him into promising that he will soon return her memories. An instant later, Vera is grabbed from behind, and the lights go out. With Vera knocked out, a man walks in with two others by his side, holding skull candles, and Leah in his arms. Fearfully, he drops the girl in Edmund’s lap, holding a gun to his head, and tells him that he has one hour to find her brother’s location in her memory.
