  Katherine P.O.V

I stayed frozen in my chair, my hand gripping onto Dean's tightly. I had felt something. I know I did. I knew better than to believe it was nothing and of course it was possible to be a spirit. We were in a hospital after all. But the touch had felt familiar, loving even. But as soon as I felt it, it was gone and so was an atmosphere that I hadn't noticed.I didn't realize before but I had a dull pain in the back of my head for short periods of time. Like when I was talking to John then when I was in Dean's room.

Slowly, I stood from my chair and walked out the room, heading back to John's room to check on them and tell him about what was happening. As I walked in, I noticed John still led in the hospital bed staring at Sam who stood by the window, his back turned and a duffel bag in his hand.I opened my mouth to say something when a feeling settled over me, like a presence in the room. I searched the room frantically with my eyes to try and find the source but it remained hidden.

Kat tensed as I rushed into the room, her eyes seeming to follow me as I walked to Sam. I didn't know if she actually saw me or if she felt me but it was a weight lifted off my chest to know that she at least knew something was happening. I wasn't completely alone. Sam was facing the window as I stalked towards him, waving my hands in front of him slightly to try and get him to notice me."Sammy! Tell me you can friggin' hear me, man, there's something in the hospital. Now, you've got to bring me back and we've got to hunt this thing. Sam!"I yelled, frustrated at the lack of acknowledgment.

"
You're quiet."John called out to Sam as I walked further into the room, opening my mouth again to talk to them. Sam spun round, his face angry and threw the bag onto the bed roughly, cutting me off.

"Did you think I wouldn't find out?"Sam growled, looking down at John. I furrowed my eyebrows, walking to the other side of the bed.

"What are you talking about?"John asked, confused although there was something in his eyes that told me he knew exactly what he was talking about.

"That stuff from Bobby, you don't use it to ward off a demon, you use it to summon one. You're planning on bringing the demon here, aren't you? Having some stupid macho showdown?!"Sam shouted at his father making my eyes widen. I knew those ingredients sounded familiar for something other than protection.

"What? You can't be serious John!"I yelled.

"I have a plan, guys."John said gently, looking between us. My anger boiled and I rolled my eyes, clenching my fists.

"That's exactly my point! Dean is dying, and you have a plan! You know what, you care more about killing this demon than you do saving your own son!"Sam screamed, pointing out the door.

"No, no, no, guys, don't do this!"I begged, looking between my father and brother. I was silently pleading for Kat to break it up but she looked just as angry as Sam.

"
Do not tell me how I feel! I am doing this for Dean. "John yelled back before Sam had even fully finished his sentence, his own anger showing on his face.

"How? How is revenge going to help him? You're not thinking about anybody but yourself, it's the same selfish obsession!"I shouted, finally getting involved. The dull ache in my head was becoming more intense but I tried to ignore it, the pain in my side and leg offering a distraction from it.

"Come on guys, don't do this!"I pleaded, becoming desperate as the tension in the air built.

"
You know, it's funny, I thought this would become your obsession too! I heard what the demon said! It had a part in your mothers death, Kat! It's made your life a living hell!"John shouted at me, pointing an accusing finger then turned his gaze to Sam."And Sam, this demon killed your mother, killed your girlfriend. You begged me to be part of this hunt. Now if you'd killed that damn thing when you had the chance, none of this would have happened."

"It was possessing you, Dad, I would have killed you too."Sam argued, rushing round the side of the bed to stand beside me.

"Yeah, and your brother would be awake right now."John glared up at him and I scoffed, shaking my head.

"Shut up, all of you!"I snapped, leaning over the bed. My frustration was building as none of them heard me although Kat would occasionally glance my way, her eyebrows furrowing.

"
Go to hell."Sam hissed.

John shook his head, looking between us."I should have never taken you both along in the first place. I knew it was a mistake, I knew I was wrong —"

"I said SHUT UP!"I yelled, swiping my hand across the table in frustration, not expecting anything out of it but the glass that was placed on their went crashing tot he floor, the liquids spilling all over the floor. I stared down at it stunned and back up at my family who all shocked into silence. They were staring down at the glass on the floor while Kat looked up, her eyes seeming to stare into my won."Dude, I full-on Swayze'd that mother." I smirked. Suddenly, I crumpled to the floor, pain riveting through my body, feeling myself flicker in and out of existence."What is it?"I asked, looking up as nurses flew past the open doorway.

"
Something's going on out there."John said to me and Sam, jerking his head in a 'Go find out' gesture. I nodded, grabbing onto Sam's arm and dragging him out the room. I followed the frantic nurses down the hallway and felt my heart drop as I saw them enter Dean's room.

"No."I whispered, letting go of Sam and running forward, ignoring the stab of pain in my leg. The sound of monitors beeping echoed through the room as a group of nurses and doctors surrounded Dean's bed, trying to resurrect him. Tears prick at my eyes as Sam comes to stand beside me, his hand reaching out to grip onto mine tightly.

"All clear."A doctor declared as he pulled out the defibrillator, placing the paddles to his chest."Clear."

His body lurches upwards but their's still no pulse. I began to sob"No."

"Still no pulse."A nurse called, pressing her fingers to his wrist.

"Okay, let's go again, 360."The doctor ordered.

"Charging."A nurse told him, taking a step back. The doctor placed the paddles back onto Dean's chest, I turned my head into Sam's chest as I cried, feeling his own tears drip onto my shoulders. I heard the electric sound pass through the room again as they tried to save his life, the beeping seeming to get louder as I realized that he still wasn't breathing yet.

I came up behind them, watching my body jump at the electric current passing through me to try and save my life. Kat and Sam's sobs were breaking my heart as I saw them grip at each other in an attempt to hold themselves together. I slowly reached my hand out to place it on her shoulder when I saw a ghostly figure floating over my bed."You get the hell away from me."I growled, snatching my hand back and charging forward."Stay back!"I yelled but it had no effect."I said get back!"

"I said get back!" A voice echoed through the room making my head snap up. I looked to Sam confused to see he had also heard something. It sounded.......just like Dean.

I grabbed for the spirit, my hands latching onto something solid for a moment before I was hurled back into the wall. It glanced up at me before it soared out the room.

The monitors slowed before a gentle beep filled the air. "We have a pulse. We're back into sinus rhythm." I sighed in relief, my body sagging against Sam. His arms wrapped around me as we stared at Dean and the doctors moving around the room.

I rushed into the hallway after the thing, looking for the spirit but it had vanished. I made my way back to my room to see Kat wrapped in Sam's arms, tears still streaming down her face as she gazed into the room. Sam seemed to be comforting her but his own eyes held pain."Don't worry, guys. I'm not going anywhere. I'm getting that thing before it gets me. It's some kind of spirit, but I could grab it. And if I can grab it, I can kill it."

Kat's gaze lifted to my direction, staring down the hallway as if she felt something."You felt that too right."She whispered to Sam who looked down at her before back into my room. He nodded making my eyes widen. They knew I was here and fighting. He tugged on her hand, pulling her away from my room. I watched them walk away before starting to wander the hospital in search of the spirit.

Suddenly, a women's voice yelled through the halls."Can't you see me? Why won't you look at me?"

"Now what?"I growled, frustrated. I ran in the direction of the voice, leading me to the reception area. A woman with short black hair was running up the stairs, yelling into people's faces in panic.

"Somebody talk to me! Say something, please!"She begged.

"Can you see me?"I called up to her and she spun around to my surprise, locking eyes with me.

"Yeah."She breathed out

I ran to the top of the stairs to meet her, keeping my voice calm."Alright, just, uh, calm down. What's your name?"

"Tessa."She answered, panic still evident in her voice.

"Okay, good, Tessa, I'm Dean."I introduced.

Her dark green eyes filled with tears as her voice shook."What's happening to me? Am - am I dead?"

"That sort of depends."I shrugged, giving her my most sympathetic expression. Tessa led us to her room where we stood in the doorway, gazing into the room where her mother held her hand beside the hospital bed. Her body was attached to different machines just like mine.

"I don't understand. I just came in for an appendectomy."She stated, confused.

"Well, I hate to bear bad news, but I think there were some complications."I sighed and she shook her head, denial settling on her face.

"It's just a dream, that's all. It's just a very weird, unbelievably vivid dream."She rationalized, turning her body to face me.

"Tessa. It's not a dream."I replied solemnly.

"Then what else could it be?"She asked, furrowing her eyebrows.

I hesitated before answering, not entirely sure how she'd take it."You ever heard of an out of body experience?"

"What are you, some new agey guy?"She asked, raising an eyebrow.

"You see me messing with crystals or listening to Yanni?"I snapped, easily getting frustrated for some reason. I sighed, calming myself down."It's actually a very old idea. Got a lot of different names: Bilocation, crisis apparition, fetches... I think it's happening to us. And if it is, it means that we're spirits of people close to death. "

"So we're going to die?"She asked, fear on her face but her voice was calm.

"No. Not if we hold on. Our bodies can get better, we can snap right back in there and wake up. "I said, determination clear. I knew it wasn't really that simple but I wanted to reassure her if not myself. I had to get back for Kat and Sam.

"
What do you mean, you felt something?"John asked in confusion. Sam had explained what had happened when Dean almost died and the feeling we were bot getting. I mentioned the strange feeling I had in his room and his voice I heard when I woke up.

"I mean it felt like.....like Dean. Like he was there, just out of eyeshot or something. I don't know if it's my psychic thing or what, it... But do you think it's even possible? I mean, do you think his spirit could be around?"Sam asked his father. Of course his psychic thing would explain it but did that mean I had the same thing? A few days ago, I would have said I had no idea but after everything.......it was possible.

"Anything's possible."John said, nodding his head.

"Well, there's one way to find out."Sam muttered, heading towards the door.

"Where are you going?"I asked and he stopped, turning to face me.

"I gotta pick something up. I'll be back."He assured, giving me a small smile.

"Wait, Sam."John called, halting Sam once again."I promise I won't hunt this demon. Not until we know Dean's okay."

Sam nodded his head before leaving. I head back to Dean's room to wait for his return, not really liking being separated from him in this condition. I didn't feel anything as I walked in, letting me know that I was alone so I sat in the chair beside him, taking his hand in mine. One thought kept crossing my mind.....if Dean was really here.....did he hear my confession?

Tessa and I were walking down a hallway."I gotta say, I'm impressed."I announced, making a 'not bad' face at her.

"With what?"She asked, surprisingly preppy considering.

"With you."I answered. After I saw her raised eyebrow, I elaborated."Most people in your spot would be jello right now, but uh, you're taking this pretty well. Maybe a little better than me. "I scoffed.

"Don't get me wrong. I was pretty freaked at first."She said, stepping in front of me as we reached the stairs. She considered her feelings before shrugging."But now, I don't know. Maybe I'm dealing."

"So you're okay with dying?"I questioned, surprised.

"No, of course not."She denied, shaking her head with a smirk."I just think, whatever's gonna happen's gonna happen. It's out of my control, it's fate."

"Huh."I breathed out. I didn't believe in all that fate shit. Everything is a choice."Well, that's crap. You always have a choice. You can either roll over and die or you can keep fighting, no matter what —"

"Room 237, code blue. Dr. Kripke to room 237, code blue."A voice cut me off through the PA announcement.

"Dean, where are you going?"Tessa asked as I started to move towards the room called.

"Just wait here."I called back. I ran down the hallway to the room that was in a familiar state. Doctors were surrounding the hospital bed where a little girl lay. The ghostly figure was looming over the girl, it's hand slowly reaching towards her head."Get away from her!"I yelled, lunging forward but it vanished. I looked around frantically, the beeping of the monitors continuing and the doctors still trying to save her life.

"Alright, let's call it."A doctor sighed and the beeping stopped, the faces falling on everyone in the room.

"Time of death, five eleven p.m."A nurse declared, glancing down at her watch.

"At least she's not suffering anymore."Another nurse beside me sympathized. I looked around stunned. I couldn't save her. She was only a little girl and I couldn't do a damn thing. My heart felt heavy and I knew the only thing that would make me feel better was Kat. That's how I found myself in my room, standing opposite her against the wall, watching how the light fading outside changed the blue in her eyes. She stared down at my body, her thumb drawing circles into my palm. She looked so tired, dark purple circles under her eyes and her skin paler than normal. It reminded me of when she almost died....a time I could never forget.

I was never the one to fall in love, never even the one to call a girl back but Kat was always different. I never fully understood why that was. I mean I've known beautiful, smart, funny girls before but for some reason, their beauty never compared to her. She was the definition of beautiful in every sense of the word. I loved everything about her; her eyes, although a common color, could never be replicated. It was the way they shined when she smiled, the wonder that would fill them every once and a while. Her full lips were the one thing that I always wished I could kiss. Her soft, pale skin and the freckles that would occasionally scatter on her nose in the summer time. Her laugh that in any situation could make a smile spread on my face. Her dorky personality that didn't seem to fit the badass hunter I knew she could be.

I've never had problems with the ladies, always using my charm as an easy way to get laid. But the one girl I wanted, I could never work up the courage to tell. That was until she said she loved me. Me, a broken shell of a man. It was something I never thought I could deserve yet would spend my entire life trying to. It was one of the reasons I was fighting so hard to get back. I wanted-no I needed to tell her that I feel the same. I needed to finally hold her in my arms and call her mine. She slowly brought my hand up to her mouth, her warm lips running over my knuckles. That warmth, the warmth I could feel on my own hand, was something I craved.

After a couple of hours alone, Sam walked into the room clutching a brown paper bag in his arms. Kat didn't seem to notice his presence straight away because she jumped when he placed a hand on her shoulder."What's that?"She asked, her voice husky from not talking for a while. It sounded just like it did when she would wake up in the morning and I honestly found it adorable. Sam looked down at her before looking around the room.

"Hey. I think maybe you're around. And if you are, don't make fun of me for this, but um, well.....there's one way we can talk."He pulled out a box from the bag that was a Ouija board.

"Oh, you gotta be kidding me."I sighed, rolling my eyes. Kat giggled slightly, looking up at him with a raised eyebrow. At least I wasn't the only one who found this stupid. Sam circled the bed and sat crossed legged on the floor, taking the Ouija board out of the box and laying it on the floor. Kat sighed before hobbling over, lowering herself onto the floor slowly.

"Dean? Dean, are you here?"Sam called out, placing his fingers on the triangular pointer. He looked over at Kat when she didn't do the same and she sighed in annoyance before thrusting her hand onto it, one of them thicker due to her cast.

"God, I feel like I'm at a slumber party."I huffed before sitting opposite them, in front of the board."Alright, guys. This isn't going to work." Slowly, I placed my fingers on the pointer. My tongue darted out, resting inbetween my teeth as I concentrated, sliding it to 'YES'. Both Kat and Sam gasped, looking at each other in surprise."I'll be damned."

Sam laughed in relief while Kat still looked stunned."It's good to hear from you, man. It hasn't been the same without you, Dean."

"Damn straight."I smirked. I pulled the pointer towards 'H', waiting for either of them to understand.

"Dean, what? H? U? Hunt? Hunting? What, are you hunting?"Kat asked, her eyebrows furrowing. I pulled the pointer to YES again."It's in the hospital, what you're hunting? Do, do you know what it is?"

"One question at a time, Kat."I grumbled.

"What is it?"Sam pressed. I pulled the pointer to spell R E A P E R.

"I don't think it's killing people. I think it's taking them. You know, when their time's just up."I explained, watching as their faces filled with concern, finally realizing what I was spelling.

"A reaper. Dean. Is it after you?"Kat asked, her voice low. I swallowed, not wanting to cause her any more pain but moved it to YES.

"If it's here naturally, there's no way to stop it."Sam muttered sadly.

"Yeah, you can't kill death."I confirmed, shrugging it off although I was terrified.

"Man, you're, um-"Sam started, swallowing hard.

"I'm screwed, guys."I whispered.

"No. No, no, no, um, there's gotta be a way."Kat interrupted him, in thought. Sam nodded in agreement, standing up and pacing.

"There's gotta be a way. Dad'll know what to do."Sam finally spoke up, leaving the room.

"Sam wait, where are you-"Kat shouted after him but cut herself off when he didn't stop. She rolled her eyes before turning back to the board, sighing softly.

"Dean?"She called softly, placing her hands back onto the pointer. I smiled small before dragging it to YES.

"I miss you."She laughed, her voice shaky from unshed tears.

"I miss you too princess."I whispered, spelling ME TOO.

"Have you been here the whole time?"She asked after a moment's pause.YES. She took in a deep breath, suddenly becoming really nervous."Did you, um, did you hear.....earlier I mean?"I grinned at her, the blush growing on her cheeks. Another YES and her eyes widened."Um, I mean, do you-"

I didn't let her finish the question before I started to move the pointer, having the intention to spell out 'I LOVE YOU TOO'. A knock at the door startled her and she dropped her hands at the side, her attention turning to the door. I sighed in frustration as my words were cut short. I knew that if I waited to tell her, I might not get the chance.

The answer to my question never came as someone entered the room. It was my John."What are you doing?"He asked, smirking at me.

I chuckled, fiddling with the hem of my dressing gown."Just talking to Dean."I stood, using the bed as support due to my weak leg."What are you doing here?"

"I just....wanted to apologize."He said after a moment making me raise an eyebrow.

"For what?"I asked, confused.

"Everything. You've always been a glue to this family. Something that held us all together but I shouldn't have dragged you into this life. That was wrong of me. Bobby and I....we should have never of opened the curtain for you. You deserved to stay blind. Kat, I want you to know that everything that demon said, it's not true. You have light in you. You and Sam do and no matter what that thing does or says, you can fight. You have to fight."He said quietly. I furrowed her eyebrows and walked forward, stopping in front of him.

I was confused, a part of me scared as to why he was saying these things. He was never one to apologize let alone go soft."Uncle John, you're scaring me. What's wrong?" I asked, concern evident in my voice. I stared up at him with wide eyes.

"Nothing darling. It's okay."He smiled softly then dragged my body into his. He held me tightly in his arm, closing his eyes. I frowned but wrapped my good arm around his middle tightly. For some reason, this felt important. Like I wouldn't be able to do this again. When he opened them, he pressed a kiss to my forehead and pulled back but not enough that I wasn't in his arms. "Thank you. For always taking care of my boys. You give them the love they deserve."

"Of course, John. They're my family." I replied, still confused.

"I know. You know when I first met you, you were this tiny thing with big blue eyes, filled with wonder."He answered, a smile settling on his face. His eyes got a far away look like he was remembering something."You got more and more beautiful as you grew older. You reminded me so much of my Mary. After she died, I made a lot of mistakes. Did things I'm not proud of.....those boys were dragged into something that they shouldn't have been."John's expression grew sad as he gazed back to me."I love you, Kat. You've always been the closet thing I've ever had to a daughter."

"Okay, seriously uncle John. What's wrong?"I demanded, fear settling in my stomach. This wasn't normal.....this felt like a goodbye. He smiled and kissed my forehead again but didn't say a word. Slowly, he retreated out of the room leaving me standing in the middle of the floor utterly confused.
