Katherine P.O.V
The sun had risen by the time we made it back to the motel. The Impala pulled up into the parking lot and we got out."I was sleeping with my peepers open?"Sam laughed as he shut the door. I began to giggle as we walked up to the motel door.
"I almost smoked that old girl, I swear. It's not funny!"Dean snapped, shaking his head.
"Oh man, you shoulda seen your face, Dean."I said, laughing harder. Sam laughed as well and got the key for the room out.
"Yeah, laugh it off. Now we're back to square one."Dean sighed. His eyes caught something off to the side. My laughing died down and I followed his gaze to see a young boy sat alone outside the office looking forlorn."Hang on."He began to walk towards the child, Sam and I close behind."Hey what's wrong?"Dean asked, crouching down to his level. I stood behind him, concern etched on my face.
He looked up at us then back to Dean."My brother's sick."
"The little guy?"Dean questioned, seeming to know who he was on about.
He nodded."Pneumonia. He's in the hospital. It's my fault."He said quietly, looking down with guilt.
"Ah c'mon, how?"Dean asked and I moved to the other side of the biy, taking his hand in mine and squeezing it.
He looked to me, his eyes filling with tears, then back down."I shoulda made sure the window was latched. He wouldn't've got pneumonia if the window was latched."
I squeezed his hand again in reassurance. It wouldn't have mattered if the window was closed or not, the shtriga still would have got in. I glanced to Dean and saw him looking away in thought. Sam was watching him thoughtfully. Something was wrong with him. Something about this case meant something.
"Listen to me. I can promise you that this is not your fault. Okay?"Dean said sternly.
He looked up at him."It's my job to look after him."
Dean nodded his head slightly, like he understood. I looked back and forth between Dean and the boy with confusion. It was as if related to him. Was it because they both had little brothers that they felt responsible for? Or was there something I was missing?
A woman rushed out the office door carrying a bag, pillow, and teddy bear. She headed towards the car parked close by, she glanced behind her and saw the boy.."Michael, I want you to turn on the no vacancy sign while I'm gone."She instructed as she loaded the car. Michael jumped up and walked towards her."I've got Denise covering room service so don't bother with any of the rooms.
"I'm going with you."Michael shouted and I stood from my crouch, moving back over to Sam.
"Not now, Michael."She scolded, looking at him with disapproval.
"But I gotta see Asher!"Michael exclaimed.
"Hey Michael."Dean started, walking towards the pair."Hey. I know how you feel -- I'm a big brother too -- but you gotta go easy on your Mom right now, okay?"
Michael nodded in defeat as his mother slammed her door shut. In her haste, she dropped her handbag."Dammit!"
"I got it."Sam said gently, leaning down to pick up her bag and hand it back to her.
"Thank you."She replied, wiping her hair from her face in stress.
"Listen, you're in no condition to drive -- why don't you let me give you a lift to the hospital."Dean offered, noticing how panicked and stressed she was.
"No, I couldn't possibly..."She said, her voice shaky and shook her head. I walked towards Michael and put my arm around his shoulders in comfort.
"No, it's no trouble. I insist."Dean insisted. She seemed to hesitate for a moment more before holding out her keys to him which he took.
