Renestrae paced across the living room, she'd been doing this since they got home thirty minutes ago, but she couldn't stop. Both Evelyn and Kaloria had tried to make comments and suggestions from their spots on the couch but she couldn't say anything in reply. She just knew that if she did she'd lose it.
"Maybe if you sat down." Kaloria suggested softly.
That was it, she couldn't take it anymore. "Sitting is not going to help anything Kali!" Even as she shouted it she regretted it. She should not have been taking her anger and frustration out of Kali.
Why were the police covering it up, and she believed that they were because why would Gordan O'Cain tell her that the cause of death was drowning but not that the hearts had been eaten out of the victims? Why did Constable Camshron know for a fact that it wasn't an arrow that killed them yet try to convict her, and now Evelyn, whenever talk of arrows came up? It just didn't make any sense unless...
No, surely not, but it would make sense, if any of this made sense. She was still trying to figure Evelyn out, if she was telling the truth and not just pulling her leg, and she was inclined to believe her friend especially since Evelyn was not the type to believe this sort of thing then it was a...And she had to believe it because she could not see Evelyn shooting an arrow at her unless something made her fear for life then...
A Kelpie, could it be a Kelpie? Could it be Constable Camshron?
Of course Constable Camshron would be who she suspected because he seemed to want to blame the first person and cover up the details of the incidents and...
By the Gods, she felt like all the pieces of the puzzle were right there she just couldn't see the picture to put them in place and it was maddening. She never should have entered that stupid contest, she never should have brought them to Scotland. She never should have...
How could she have known this was going to happen though? How could she have known that a mythological creature was going to start killing people when they...No, she couldn't think that, thinking that it was in fact a Kelpie just made the unreal real and she couldn't do that, could she?
"REN!"
"RENESTRAE!!"
Crap they were trying to get her attention, probably trying to talk to her for awhile now if they were shouting. What was she supposed to do? How was she going to lead? What could she tell them if even she didn't know what to do? If she was this stressed and freaking out?
Damn, it Frank, you need to reassure them!
And Therein lied the problem, there was no way she could reassure them when there was literally no situation that could have prepared her for this.
She stopped her pacing and took a deep breath. "Alright, now tell me again Evelyn, what did you see?"
"I don't see how telling it again is goin-"
"Just do it!" Renestrae snapped, turning her body forward to face the couch, but she regretted it almost instantly, no wonder she couldn't keep a boyfriend, judging from the way both Kaloria and Evelyn flinched she must have been really scary when she was mad. She sighed, then in a calmer voice said, "Just do it, please."
"I was walking in the forest when I heard a woman scream for help and I went to investigate. I know you said not to be a hero Ren, but I couldn't not help the woman and I figured I might be able to at least intimidate her attacker. When I got there, there wasn't a man in sight and she was atop a black horse only it was like she was stuck to it. She pleaded with me to help her, then it saw me and it had the reddest eyes that I've ever seen. Then it growled and dove below the water with the girl still on it's back. I ran then until I tripped just inside the gate. I was sure I was done for but it didn't make a move on me instead it said, 'This isn't over' and ran away. I ran inside the house and when I heard you at the door I was sure it was the Kelpie come back to finish me off."
