...
"Kali, have you seen Ren? I though she would have woken us up hours ago," Evelyn asked tiredly as she exited her bedroom and made a beeline for the kitchen. Maybe coffee would help her hangover go away. Maybe it would even ease the pounding in her head.
"Did you take a look at your door?" Kaloria asked, taking a sip from her own cup of coffee.
"What's my door got to do with Ren?" Evelyn asked as she poured herself a mug and took a sip. Honestly, she would never understand how Renestrae was able to get up so early. The girl wasn't even that cheerful in the morning.
"She left us each a note saying that she was going to the forest beyond that field out back for target practice."
"Oh. What time is it?"
"About one in the afternoon. I'm starting to get worried. She should have been back by now."
"Oh, I'm sure she's fine," Evelyn said, waving her hand in a dismissive gesture. "You know Ren. She probably just lost track of time."
"Or got lost again. You know how bad her-"
Kaloria was cut off by the sudden loud knocking at the door.
"I'll get it," Kaloria answered, rising from her chair. "It's probably Ainslie. Last night he said he wanted to see me again."
Evelyn smiled. "Go get 'em, Tiger!" She took another long drink of her coffee as she heard the muffled sound of two voices and started to grin like the Cheshire cat. It was about time that Kaloria found someone that took an interest in her. It seemed to her that too many of the guys back home that appreciated big girls were scared off by Kaloria's psoriasis. It was a stupid thing to be scared off by in her opinion. If the red, flaky patches were contagious, she and Renestrae would have caught it years ago.
"OH! MY! GOD!"
Evelyn almost jumped right out of her skin at Kaloria's shout and hastily put her coffee mug down before rushing to the door to see what the problem was. Of course, Evelyn never would have guessed what it was.
Standing outside in front of Kaloria while she held onto the railing as if it were her lifeline was a police officer. At least she assumed he was a police officer.
"What's going on here?" she demanded. It was quite surprising, but Evelyn had been told that despite only being five foot she could be quite intimidating at times.
Kaloria looked up at Evelyn, tears pooling in her amber eyes. "They have Ren in custody. They... They think she killed someone."
"Now, lass. Our investigation has only started. We dinnae know fer sure if yer friend was involved or nae. Please, if th' two of ye are Evelyn Delamasso and Kaloria Vedder, then I need ye tae come with me tae th' station."
"Of course. Kali, could you grab the keys? They should be on the table. We want to cooperate with the nice policeman."
"Ainslie said they're called Constables," Kaloria whispered.
"Kali, I couldn't really care less what the proper word over here is. Could you please just get the keys so we can get this straightened out?"
Kali nodded and Evelyn swore she had never seen the tall girl move faster.
