.............
Diana's expression continues to express disbelief, with her mouth hanging open and eyes bulging out. "The seamstress is going to kill me," she repeats.
"Well then the seamstress shouldn't have tried to make me look like a bride." I run my hands down the skirt, admiring the puffiness of it as it ends just before my knees. The dress looks both appropriate and beautiful. "Besides, the dress suits my necklace a lot more, don't you think?
"And the necklace! Oh my goodness, Thenora picked out a whole set of Jewelry for you, including your crown." She runs her hands through her hair, a few strands coming out of her bun. "How am I going to explain to her that you don't want to wear them," she cries.
"Hey," I move toward her, giving her shoulder a light squeeze. "She's my problem. You're only problem is getting ready for the festival."
She lowers her head, her shoulders sagging along with it as she plays with the hem of her servants dress. "No one's told you?" she mutters sadly.
"Told me what?"
She lifts her head, eyes barely meeting mine. "Servants aren't allowed to attend the festival."
Her comment makes me stop admiring my comfortable silver strapped flats and raise my eyes to meet hers. "Excuse me?"
"Servants aren't allowed to attend-"
"No, I heard what you said. But why?"
"We aren't considered to be a vital part of this kingdom." She shrugs her shoulders in defeat. "That's just the way it is."
"I don't understand. Lex informed me that commoners from the kingdom are also attending the festival. So why can't you?"
She shakes her head once more, sighing this time. "Only certain commoners that benefit the kingdom are attending. Anyways," she says, trying to wave away her sadness. "On a happier note, you should be descending the ballroom staircase in about two hours; all eyes will be on you. This is how every winter festival has been presenting the Queen for centuries, so it's important-"
"What about Terry," I interrupt. "You're telling me the man who makes food for each and every person in this castle is not attending either."
"My Queen, what's done is done. Like I said, it's been like this for centuries."
"Well, it's not happening in this century."
"My Queen-"
"And Diana, please stop calling me that. It's Kailani."
She meets my eyes, looking dumbfounded, as she opens her mouth to respond, but quickly closes it and sighs.
"You and every other member of this castle as well as in this kingdom are just as important as I am. Without any of you there would be no kingdom, so what makes you think that you're so unimportant?"
A smile lights her face at my words, a tear threatening to fall. "This kingdom is very fortunate to have you as our Queen, but there is nothing we can do now."
"I don't believe that and neither should you."
"But-"
"No buts. Now, I want you and the rest of the servants to get ready for the festival. Also, spread the word to the commoners that they are to attend as well. Tell everyone to meet me in the castle's garden in two hours, I will take care of the rest."
