After TWS:

You watched as Bucky drifted off into sleep on your sofa, looking so peaceful, so innocent...

But he wasn't.

You'd read the reports, all the classified documents and the further you read on the more you realised that Bucky Barnes was a tortured, broken, soul. And it was all Hydra's fault. Your stomach turned just thinking about them. Forcing him to do what he did...

You couldn't bear to think about it anymore. The only thing that mattered now was that he was peaceful and relaxed.

"mmhhmm..." Bucky murmured as he twisted his body around. A small grin made its way onto your face. He was so cute.

You continued reading some crummy beauty magazine that Pepper left in your apartment the last time she visited, which must have been weeks, if not months ago. She still wasn't comfortable with the idea of a highly trained assassin sharing an apartment with you, she would say:

"(y/n) how do you know he won't turn on you?"

or

"(y/n) what if he hurts you?"

But you knew that Bucky would never knowingly hurt you, and even if he lost control he would always come back to you and you would forgive him.

But would he forgive himself?

You snapped back to the present day and realised you were staring at this double page spread on how to lose 10 pounds in 4 days, not very useful.

You check your watch, 1am. It was time for you to head to your bed. Although Bucky was your boyfriend you had separate rooms and separate beds. This wasn't because you wanted to be separated it's because Steve and Bucky still hold traditional values about not having sex before marriage. You didn't mind, sex never crossed your mind. You just wanted to spend each day with Bucky.

"MmmmHhhmmm..." Bucky's murmurs became louder, and he shifted around more. You wondered whether you were disturbing him so you got out of the red leather armchair you were sitting on and found a place to put the magazine.

That place was the bin.

Was that? Oh it was. What was a slice of pizza doing on the carpet? You let out a sigh as you bent down to pick it up.

Your fingers were millimeters away from the slice when something crashed into your back, sending you flying. The air was knocked out of your lungs and whoever it was had pinned you down onto the floor, both arms were tied behind your back and you wished right at that moment that Bucky had heard the commotion and would wake up and save you.

"Target acquired, time to finish the mission" Your eyes widened, your heart pumped so loudly that it was the only thing you could hear. Your entire body went limp.

Bucky couldn't save you, because the person attacking you WAS Bucky.

With one foul swoop of his metal arm he managed to turn you around, so your eyes met.

"Bucky! Please stop! It's me!" I screamed, desperate for the real Bucky to come back to me.

I was instead greeted with a cold, lifeless pair of blue eyes. These weren't Bucky's eyes.

These were the Winter Soldier's eyes.

"Who's Bucky?" his name made him angry, he was frustrated that he knew this name was important, but he didn't know why.

His metal fist wrapped tightly around your neck, his touch was cold, distant and deadly. You needed to make him snap out of it before it was too late.

"Bu-cky" you croaked, your eyes doing more talking than your mouth ever could.

You were powerless against him, after all you were only an agent at Shield, not a highly trained assassin with a metal arm.

You saw something flash through his eyes.

Pain?

Madness?

Regret?

Shock?

Realisation?

You couldn't tell, you were blacking out. That's what a lack of oxygen will do to you.

"(y/n)?"

All went black.

4 hours later:

"mmhhhhmmmm?" you mumbled as you stretched. You noticed that you were lying in a bed, more specifically your bed. Although at 5 o'clock it was more like being on a soft, fluffy, warm cloud. You never wanted to leave. But then the memories came flooding back to you.

Your remembered being attacked.

You remembered struggling to breathe.

You remembered panicking.

You remembered Bucky.

Were you dead?

You felt around you, you tenderly touched your neck.

Yep. You're very much alive, but what or who saved you?

It was then you noticed a folded piece of paper on your side. Nervously you opened it.

It read:

Dear (y/n),

I love you and I always will, but last night I realised that I could never be with you. I almost killed you tonight. And if I did...

Well... I could never live with myself.

I'm doing this for you, you'll be safer without me near you. But that doesn't mean we can't contact each other, thank God you taught me how to use a phone!

Please don't try and find me, I have somewhere safe to go and if I ever turn on you again don't hesitate to do whatever you have to do to safe yourself.

I'm too dangerous (y/n).

With eternal love,

Bucky Barnes

XxX

Your tears splashed the paper, making the black ink run blue.

You knew deep down that this was probably best, but you needed him here with you, you needed him.

And he needed you.

You composed yourself and rushed to Bucky's room. Only a few belongs remained, mostly clothes, trinkets and such. Stuff he couldn't pack.

"Bucky?" you thought that if you called his name he would appear. No such luck.

You grabbed the only photo of you and him that remained on his wall, which was once littered with them.

You took it when you and Bucky went to the carnival, your right arm was wrapped his shoulders and he was holding a huge stuffed Captain America toy he had won in a shooting game. Smiles were plastered on your faces. That day was so perfect...

Fiddling with the photo in your hands you saw some writing on the back, it was Bucky's handwriting:

I took all the others so that I can see your smile everyday. Hope you don't mind.

I left this one as I know it was your favourite. It was Steve's favourite too, maybe that had something to do with the toy...

You burst into a fit of ugly, horrible, loud sobs. Only stopping every-so often to let out a scream.

While trying to keep you whole Bucky Barnes had broken you, Pepper was right.
