This is my first ever one-shot I wrote and it actually doesn't feature Bucky much, just to let you know. It's more about you admiring him but never actually being with him.

1940's:
Working as waitress sure was hard work, especially tonight. Couples were coming here to spend their last night together before husbands, boyfriends or fiancés got dispatched to fight in the war, making their family, friends and most importantly, their country proud. I just hoped I wouldn't be seeing any of these women in a couple of weeks crying their eyes out because their man wouldn't be coming back. I was lucky in a sense, I had no-one to lose. Lucy's diner (Lucy really was an imaginative gal) was packed, but few were sitting down or eating, most were dancing, enjoying each other's embrace.
The doors flung open and a man walked in, uniform and all, with not one, but two gals! I suppose they could be siblings, but I didn't believe this for one second because he looked... Well... Handsome. To put it bluntly he was the most handsome man I had ever seen, his eyes sparkled with such an intensity it was like looking at baby blue Christmas lights, his lips, his skin... His everything. I could stare at him all my life, but I had a job to do.
I nervously walked over to them with my pad and pen "Welcome to Lucy's Diner home of the best burgers this side of Brooklyn." I didn't need to fake a smile this time, something about that man caused a reaction inside of me that just forced me to smile. I think I might be in love.
"Thank you ma'am, may we?" he gestured to an empty table. Listening to his voice was like eating chocolate.
"Of course, this way." We had to walk our customers to the table, I led the way, making a path in between the tables, chairs and people.
"Our specials today are located on the board" I gestured to the blackboard on the wall after they had sat down "And here's some menus for you, may I personally recommend the cheese burger and chips?"
"Of course, you can't beat the classics can you Bonnie?" The handsome soldier smiled at the first girl sitting to his right who just smiled a weak, lifeless, smile.
To ease the tension he spoke again, this time to the second girl sitting directly opposite him. "What do you say Connie?" he asked.
"It's true, the classics are the best... You'll have to forgive Bonnie, she got stood up on her date and to be perfectly honest with you he shouldn't be the one standing his dates up, he's lucky she even let him date her." And with that the brunette downed the glass of water I just poured for her.
"Connie I told you that Steve went to enlist and he was heartbroken to leave you alone but he's been wanting this since war broke out" This guy looked seriously concerned, scared and annoyed all at once. This Steve fellow must have been important to him, a brother maybe?
"Anyway I'll be having... How rude of me, we don't even know your name!" The gentleman asked, his eyes locked onto mine. I was caught like a rabbit in the headlights but after a few seconds of stuttering I managed to spit out-
"(y/n), (y/n) is my name" I tried my best to sound cool, but I sounded stupid.
"(y/n) is a lovely name, you know I used to do to school with someone called (y/n)-"
"Waitress! Over here!" The people I was serving still continued their conversation when I was called away to get another couples order, medium fries and two cheeseburgers. But when I turned back around the table was empty, no handsome man or two ladies with rhyming names. Just a table and four chairs. I rushed over there, they were gone, I surveyed the entire diner. They were gone. I didn't even get to hear his name. What was his name? I needed to hear his name. I rushed outside, glancing all around the crowded Brooklyn streets. There they were! The young lady who had been left on her date appeared to be crying, the other two were comforting her.
"Get back in here! You have customers to serve!" Lucy certainly knew how to get my attention and my ass back inside that diner. I let out a long, heart felt sigh, hoping that that man would look up at me, so I could hold his face in my memory forever. No such luck.

1994:
To this day his face still haunted me, it appeared that he didn't need to look up again, his face was already engraved into my memory, like he was part of me. Unfortunately I never did see that man again, or find out his name. So I just ended up calling him Steve, after that man he mentioned in the diner all those years ago. I would say to my friends and family:
"One day I'll find Steve, and on that day I'll confess my feelings for him"
They would nod, smile or laugh. I would smile too.
As the years went by I would start saying:
"I wonder whether I'll see Steve again"
or
"Do you think Steve made it out alive?"
They would shake their head, frown or sigh. I would cry alone in my room at night.
I stopped working in the diner a year later, helping the war effort by making bombs in the factories, that's where I met my husband (h/n). He was funny, kind, sweet and handsome. But he wasn't the man I feel madly, recklessly, hopelessly in love with at first sight.
We married and had (n) children who in turn had (n) grandchildren. All in all my life was amazing and I wouldn't change it for the world. I only wonder about what could have been between me and Steve, all these questions and I'll die without knowing the answers. But what really got me the most is that he knew my name, and I would never hear his.
