A/N - I suggest listening to the song in the media box. It fits this chapter well xx
Chapter 25 – That Sounds Like a Move You'd Pull At a Frat Party
"I just felt like it. Don't get any wrong ideas; I'm not interested in you." He said casually.
His words felt like a physical blow to my face but I was quick to hide the embarrassment and inevitable hurt that I was feeling inside. I felt like a fool for even thinking that someone like him would even look twice at someone like me. There is a galaxy's distance between us on the social hierarchy and he has a million gorgeous girls in the palm of his hand.
My hands grew clammy as an awkward silence fell between us, "Um... Okay. That's cool."
Hunter's eyes searched mine before he let out a laugh, "Sorry, that was a bit blunt. I just wanted to make it clear that nothing will ever happen between us."
I shook my head rapidly in an attempt to seem convincing, "No no it's fine. I was also trying to get that across. I'm not interested in you."
Hunter's hands were tucked into his jean pockets and his eyes fell behind me before his signature smirk appeared on his face.
"Do you wanna carry on learning how to skateboard?"
I suddenly became aware of my surroundings, realizing that the sun was still out, blazing down at us even though the chilly wind coated my skin in goose bumps - it was probably a bad idea to wear short sleeves today. No one was out right now – not a single car had passed by the street in front of the park.
"Isn't this place supposed to be loud and lively?" I asked.
Hunter looked up from his phone and his eyes scanned the empty place before returning back to his phone screen.
Great. So he finds me boring.
"People usually start coming at around 5 and then it gets filled up by 7 or 8. You still haven't answered my question, princess."
Princess.
That nickname hadn't bothered me until now. Maybe because now I know that every time he flirts with me or compliments me or even talks to me, it's just out of fun and he 'feels like it'.
"No, I don't want you to carry on teaching me. I actually need to get home."
I took a step away from him and turned around to walk away but his voice stopped me.
"Hey, I'll drive you."
'I don't think being in the same car as the guy that I just got pathetically rejected by is a good idea' I wanted to say, but I bit my tongue and opted for a more practical response.
"No thank you."
"Alright. Text me when you get home."
I could hear the care in his voice and it made me regret asking him why he kissed me so that I could convince myself that I had a chance.
After realizing how stupid that sounded, I groaned and ran a hand through my hair.
God, I'm being so pathetic. When was the last time I was this hung up on a man?
When I was across the street from the park, I turned around and sighed, seeing Hunter talking on the phone. Even from this distance I could make out the smile playing on his lips as he absentmindedly kicked a pebble around.
I couldn't help but wish that I could make him smile like that.
The walk home felt slow and painful and my mind kept wondering back to Hunter every time I tried distracting myself from him.
